The Irish Rover - The Pogues[00:00:00]
On the fourth of July eighteen hundred and six[00:00:09]
We set sail from the sweet cove of Cork[00:00:12]
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks[00:00:15]
For the grand city hall in New York[00:00:19]
Towas a wonderful craft, she was rigged fore-and-aft[00:00:22]
And oh, how the wild winds drove her.[00:00:26]
She'd got several blasts, she'd twenty-seven masts[00:00:29]
And we called her the Irish Rover.[00:00:32]
We had one million bales of the best Sligo rags[00:00:37]
We had two million barrels of stones[00:00:40]
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides,[00:00:44]
We had four million barrels of bones.[00:00:47]
We had five million hogs, we had six million dogs,[00:00:51]
Seven million barrels of porter.[00:00:54]
We had eight million bails of old nanny goats' tails,[00:00:57]
In the hold of the Irish Rover.[00:01:01]
There was awl Mickey Coote who played hard on his flute[00:01:05]
When the ladies lined up for his set[00:01:08]
He was tooting with skill for each sparkling quadrille[00:01:12]
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet[00:01:15]
With his sparse witty talk he was cock of the walk[00:01:18]
As he rolled the dames under and over[00:01:22]
They all knew at a glance when he took up his stance[00:01:26]
And he sailed in the Irish Rover[00:01:29]
There was Barney McGee from the banks of the Lee,[00:02:02]
There was Hogan from County Tyrone[00:02:05]
There was Jimmy McGurk who was scarred stiff of work[00:02:08]
And a man from Westmeath called Malone[00:02:12]
There was Slugger O'Toole who was drunk as a rule[00:02:15]
And fighting Bill Tracey from Dover[00:02:19]
And your man Mick McCann from the banks of the Bann[00:02:22]
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover[00:02:26]
We had sailed seven years when the measles broke out[00:02:58]
And the ship lost it's way in a fog.[00:03:01]
And that whale of the crew was reduced down to two,[00:03:05]
Just meself and the captain's old dog.[00:03:08]
Then the ship struck a rock, oh Lord what a shock[00:03:12]
The bulkhead was turned right over[00:03:15]
Turned nine times around, and the poor dog was drowned[00:03:20]
I'm the last of the Irish Rover[00:03:28]
