The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot[00:00:00]
The legend lives on from[00:00:19]
The Chippewa on down[00:00:20]
Of the big lake they called 'Gitche Gumee'[00:00:22]
The lake it is said never gives up her dead[00:00:28]
When the skies of November turn gloomy[00:00:31]
With a load of iron ore[00:00:38]
Twenty-six thousand tons more[00:00:39]
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty [00:00:41]
That good ship and crew[00:00:47]
Was a bone to be chewed[00:00:49]
When the gales of November came early [00:00:51]
The ship was the pride of the American side[00:00:57]
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin[00:01:00]
As the big freighters go [00:01:05]
It was bigger than most[00:01:06]
With a crew and good captain well seasoned[00:01:08]
Concluding some terms[00:01:12]
With a couple of steel firms[00:01:14]
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland[00:01:16]
And later that night when the ship's bell rang[00:01:20]
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin' [00:01:24]
The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound[00:01:38]
And a wave broke over the railing[00:01:41]
And every man knew as the captain did too [00:01:48]
T'was the witch of November come stealin' [00:01:51]
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait[00:01:57]
When the Gales of November came slashin' [00:02:01]
When afternoon came it was freezin' rain[00:02:05]
In the face of a hurricane west wind [00:02:09]
When suppertime came [00:02:28]
The old cook came on deck sayin' [00:02:30]
Fellas it's too rough to feed ya [00:02:33]
At Seven P M a main[00:02:38]
Hatchway caved in he said[00:02:40]
Fellas it's been good t'know ya[00:02:42]
The captain wired in he had water comin' in[00:02:48]
And the good ship and crew was in peril [00:02:51]
And later that night when[00:02:55]
His lights went outta sight[00:02:57]
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald [00:02:59]
Does any one know[00:03:22]
Where the love of God goes[00:03:24]
When the waves turn the minutes to hours [00:03:26]
The searches all say they'd[00:03:32]
Have made Whitefish Bay[00:03:34]
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her [00:03:36]
They might have split up[00:03:42]
Or they might have capsized;[00:03:43]
May have broke deep and took water [00:03:45]
And all that remains[00:03:49]
Is the faces and the names[00:03:51]
Of the wives and[00:03:53]
The sons and the daughters [00:03:54]
Lake Huron rolls Superior sings[00:04:13]
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion [00:04:16]
Old Michigan steams[00:04:20]
Like a young man's dreams;[00:04:22]
The islands and bays are for sportsmen [00:04:24]
And farther below Lake Ontario[00:04:30]
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her [00:04:34]
And the iron boats go as[00:04:38]
The mariners all know[00:04:39]
With the Gales of November remembered [00:04:41]
In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed [00:05:21]
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral [00:05:24]
The church bell chimed till[00:05:31]
It rang twenty-nine times[00:05:32]
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald [00:05:34]
The legend lives on from[00:05:40]
The Chippewa on down[00:05:42]
Of the big lake they call 'Gitche Gumee' [00:05:44]
Superior they said never gives up her dead[00:05:50]
When the gales of November come early[00:05:53]
