Jonah And The Grampus - Stanley Holloway[00:00:00]
I'll tell you the story of Jonah[00:00:06]
A really remarkable tale[00:00:08]
A peaceful and humdrum existence he had[00:00:11]
Until one day he went for a sail[00:00:14]
The weather were grand when they started[00:00:16]
But later at turn of the tide[00:00:19]
The wind started blowing the water got rough[00:00:22]
And Jonah felt funny inside[00:00:25]
When the ship started pitching and tossing[00:00:28]
He tried hard his feelings to smother[00:00:31]
At last he just leant his head over the side[00:00:34]
And one thing seemed to bring up another[00:00:37]
When the sailors saw what he were doing[00:00:40]
It gave them a bit of a jar[00:00:43]
They didn't mind trippers enjoying theirselves[00:00:46]
But thowt this ere were going too far[00:00:49]
Said one Is there nowt you can think on[00:00:52]
To stop you from feelin' so bad[00:00:55]
And Jonah said Aye lift me over the side[00:00:58]
And chuck me in there's a good lad[00:01:01]
The sailor were not one to argue[00:01:03]
He said Happen you know what's best[00:01:07]
Then he picked Jonah up by the seat of his pants[00:01:09]
And chucked him in as per request[00:01:12]
A Grampus came up at that moment[00:01:15]
And seeing the old man hard set[00:01:18]
It swam to his side and it opened its mouth[00:01:21]
And said Come in lad out of the wet[00:01:24]
It's manner were kindly and pleading[00:01:27]
As if to say RSVP[00:01:31]
Said Jonah I've eaten a kipper or two[00:01:34]
But I never thowt one would eat me[00:01:37]
The inside of Grampus surprised him[00:01:40]
Twere the first time he'd been behind scenes[00:01:44]
He found commodation quite ample for one[00:01:47]
But it smelled like a tin of sardines[00:01:49]
Then over the sea they went cruising[00:01:53]
And Jonah were filled with delight[00:01:56]
With his eye to the blow ole in the Grampus's head[00:01:59]
He watched ships that passed in the night[00:02:02]
I'm tired of watching said Jonah[00:02:05]
I'll rest for a minute or so[00:02:08]
I'm afraid as you wont find your bed very soft[00:02:10]
Said the Grampus I've got a hard roe[00:02:13]
At that moment up came a whale boat[00:02:17]
Said Jonah What's this ere we've struck[00:02:21]
They're after my blubber the Grampus replied[00:02:23]
You'd better old tight while I duck[00:02:26]
The water came in through the spy ole[00:02:29]
And hit Jonah's face a real slosher[00:02:33]
He said Shut your blow 'ole and Grampus replied[00:02:35]
I can't lad it needs a new washer[00:02:39]
Jonah tried card to bail out the water[00:02:41]
But found all his efforts in vain[00:02:44]
For as fast as he emptied[00:02:47]
The slops out through the gills[00:02:49]
They came in through the blow ole again[00:02:50]
When at finish they came to the surface[00:02:54]
Jonah took a look out and he saw[00:02:57]
They were stuck on a bit of a sandbank that lay[00:02:59]
One rod pole or perch from the shore[00:03:02]
Said the Grampus We're in shallow water[00:03:05]
I've brought you as far as I may[00:03:08]
If you sit on the blow 'ole on top of my head[00:03:11]
I'll spout you the rest of the way[00:03:14]
So Jonah obeyed these instructions[00:03:17]
And the Grampus his lungs did expand[00:03:20]
Then blew out a fountain that lifted Jou up[00:03:24]
And carried him safely to land[00:03:27]
There was tears in their eyes when they parted[00:03:30]
And each blew a kiss a real bigun[00:03:34]
Then the Grampus went off with a swish of it's tail[00:03:38]
And Jonah walked back home to Wigan[00:03:42]
