Harriet Tubman’s Ballard

Harriet Tubman's Ballard - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]

I was five years old in Bucktown Maryland[00:00:04]

When into slavery I was sent [00:00:10]

I'll tell you of the beatings and of the fighting[00:00:16]

In my ninety-three years I've spent [00:00:23]

I helped a field hand make a run for freedom[00:00:28]

When my fifteenth year was rolling round [00:00:33]

And the guard he caught him in a little store[00:00:40]

In a little slavery village town [00:00:46]

The boss made a grab to catch the field hand[00:00:52]

I jumped in and blocked the door [00:00:59]

The boss he hit me with a two pound scale iron[00:01:05]

And I went black down on the floor [00:01:11]

On a bundle of rags in our log cabin[00:01:18]

My mother she ministered unto my needs [00:01:24]

It was here I swore I'd give my life blood[00:01:31]

Just to turn my people free [00:01:37]

In '44 I married John Tubman[00:01:44]

Well I loved him well till '49 [00:01:50]

But he would not come and fight beside me[00:01:56]

So I left him there behind [00:02:02]

I left Bucktown with my two brothers[00:02:08]

But they got scared and run back home [00:02:14]

I followed my northern star of freedom[00:02:21]

I walked the grass and trees alone [00:02:27]

I slept in a barn loft and in a haystack[00:02:33]

I slept with my people in slavery shacks [00:02:38]

They said I'd die by the boss man's bullets[00:02:44]

But I told them I can't turn back [00:02:51]

The sun was shining in the early morning[00:02:57]

When I come to my free state line[00:03:04]

I pinched myself to see if I was dreaming[00:03:11]

I just could not believe my eyes [00:03:18]

I went back home and I got my parents[00:03:28]

I loaded them into a buckboard hack [00:03:34]

We crossed six states and other slaves followed[00:03:40]

Up to Canada made our tracks [00:03:46]

One slave got scared and he tried to turn backwards[00:03:52]

I pulled my pistol in front of his eyes [00:03:58]

I said get up and walk to your freedom[00:04:05]

Or by this fireball you will die [00:04:11]

When John Brown hit them at Harper's Ferry[00:04:18]

My men was fighting right by his side [00:04:25]

When John Brown swung upon his gallows[00:04:32]

It's then I hung my head and cried [00:04:39]

Give the black man guns and give him powder[00:04:45]

To Abe Lincoln this I said:[00:04:52]

You've just crippled that snake of slavery[00:04:59]

We've got to fight to kill him dead [00:05:06]

When we faced the guns of lightning[00:05:13]

And the thunders broke our sleep [00:05:19]

After we waded the bloody rainstorms[00:05:26]

It was dead men that we reaped [00:05:32]

Yes we faced the zigzag lightning[00:05:37]

But it was worth the price we paid [00:05:43]

When our thunder had rumbled over[00:05:49]

We'd laid slavery in its grave [00:05:54]

Come now and stand around my deathbed[00:06:02]

And I will sing some spirit songs [00:06:09]

I'm on my way to my greater union[00:06:16]

Now my ninety-three years are gone[00:06:24]
