Hurricane - InstaHit Crew[00:00:00]
Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night[00:00:15]
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall.[00:00:19]
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood,[00:00:23]
Cries out, "My God, they killed them all!"[00:00:27]
Here comes the story of the Hurricane,[00:00:30]
The man the authorities came to blame[00:00:34]
For somethin' that he never done.[00:00:38]
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been[00:00:42]
The champion of the world.[00:00:46]
Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see[00:00:58]
And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously.[00:01:02]
"I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands[00:01:06]
"I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand.[00:01:09]
I saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops[00:01:13]
"One of us had better call up the cops."[00:01:17]
And so Patty calls the cops[00:01:21]
And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin'[00:01:24]
In the hot New Jersey night.[00:01:28]
Meanwhile, far away in another part of town[00:01:41]
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around.[00:01:45]
Number one contender for the middleweight crown[00:01:48]
Had no idea what kinda sh*t was about to go down[00:01:52]
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road[00:01:56]
Just like the time before and the time before that.[00:02:00]
In Paterson that's just the way things go.[00:02:03]
If you're black you might as well not show up on the street[00:02:07]
'Less you wanna draw the heat.[00:02:11]
Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops.[00:02:24]
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around[00:02:27]
He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like[00:02:31]
Middleweights[00:02:34]
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates."[00:02:35]
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head.[00:02:39]
Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead"[00:02:42]
So they took him to the infirmary[00:02:46]
And though this man could hardly see[00:02:50]
They told him that he could identify the guilty men.[00:02:53]
Fourn the mornin' and they haul Rubin in,[00:03:07]
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs.[00:03:10]
The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye[00:03:14]
Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!"[00:03:17]
Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane,[00:03:22]
The man the authorities came to blame[00:03:25]
For somethin' that he never done.[00:03:29]
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been[00:03:33]
The champion of the world.[00:03:37]
Four months later, the ghettos are in flame,[00:03:50]
Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name[00:03:53]
While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game[00:03:56]
And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody[00:04:00]
To blame.[00:04:03]
"Remember that murder that happened in a bar?"[00:04:04]
"Remember you said you saw the getaway car?"[00:04:08]
"You think you'd like to play ball with the law?"[00:04:11]
"Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that[00:04:15]
Night?"[00:04:18]
"Don't forget that you are white."[00:04:20]
Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure."[00:04:33]
Cops said, " A poor boy like you could use a break[00:04:36]
We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend[00:04:39]
Bello[00:04:42]
Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow.[00:04:43]
You'll be doin' society a favor.[00:04:47]
That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver.[00:04:51]
We want to put his a** in stir[00:04:55]
We want to pin this triple murder on him[00:04:58]
He ain't no Gentleman Jim."[00:05:03]
Rubin could take a man out with just one punch[00:05:15]
But he never did like to talk about it all that much.[00:05:18]
It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay[00:05:22]
And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way[00:05:26]
Up to some paradise[00:05:30]
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice[00:05:33]
And ride a horse along a trail.[00:05:37]
But then they took him to the jailhouse[00:05:41]
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.[00:05:44]
All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance[00:05:58]
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.[00:06:01]
The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums[00:06:05]
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum[00:06:09]
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger.[00:06:13]
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger.[00:06:16]
And though they could not produce the gun,[00:06:20]
The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed[00:06:24]
And the all-white jury agreed.[00:06:28]
Rubin Carter was falsely tried.[00:06:42]
The crime was murder "one," guess who testified?[00:06:44]
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied[00:06:48]
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.[00:06:51]
How can the life of such a man[00:06:56]
Be in the palm of some fool's hand?[00:06:59]
To see him obviously framed[00:07:03]
Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land[00:07:06]
Where justice is a game.[00:07:11]
Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties[00:07:23]
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise[00:07:27]
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell[00:07:30]
An innocent man in a living hell.[00:07:34]
Yes, that's the story of the Hurricane,[00:07:38]
But it won't be over till they clear his name[00:07:42]
And give him back the time he's done.[00:07:46]
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been[00:07:49]
The champion of the world.[00:07:54]
