The Sick Note - The Dubliners/Ronnie Drew[00:00:00]
Dear Sir I write this note to you[00:00:00]
To tell you of me plight[00:00:03]
And at the time of writing [00:00:05]
I am not a pretty sight;[00:00:06]
My body is all black and blue [00:00:09]
My face a deathly gray[00:00:11]
And I write this note to say[00:00:13]
Why Paddy's not at work today [00:00:16]
While working on the fourteenth floor[00:00:19]
Some bricks I had to clear;[00:00:22]
Now to throw them down from[00:00:24]
Such a height was not a good idea [00:00:25]
The foreman wasn't very pleased [00:00:28]
He beeing an awkward sod[00:00:30]
He said I'd have to cart them down[00:00:32]
The ladders in me hod [00:00:34]
Now clearing all these bricks[00:00:37]
By hand it was so very slow [00:00:39]
So I hoisted up a barrel[00:00:42]
And secured the rope below [00:00:44]
But in me haste to do the job[00:00:46]
I was to blind to see[00:00:49]
That a barrelful of building bricks[00:00:52]
Was heavier than me [00:00:54]
So when I untied the rope[00:00:57]
The barrel fell like lead[00:00:58]
And clinging tightly to the rope[00:01:00]
I started up instead [00:01:03]
Well I shot up like a rocket[00:01:05]
Till to my dismay I found[00:01:07]
That halfway up[00:01:10]
I met the bloody barrel comming down [00:01:11]
Well the barrel broke me shoulder[00:01:15]
As to the ground it sped [00:01:17]
And when I reached the top[00:01:19]
I banged the pully with my head [00:01:21]
Well I clung on tight through numbed[00:01:24]
Shock from this almighty blow[00:01:26]
And the barrel spilled out half[00:01:29]
The bricks fourteen floors below [00:01:31]
Now when these bricks had fallen[00:01:34]
From the barrel to the floor[00:01:36]
I then outweighed the barrel and[00:01:39]
So started down once more;[00:01:41]
Still clinging tightly to the rope [00:01:44]
I sped towards the ground [00:01:46]
And I landed on the brocken bricks[00:01:48]
That were all scattered round [00:01:50]
Well I lay there groaning on the ground [00:01:53]
I thougth I'd passed the worst [00:01:56]
When the barrel hit the pully-wheel[00:01:59]
And then the bottom burst [00:02:01]
Well a shower of bricks rained down on me [00:02:03]
I hadn't got a hope[00:02:06]
As I lay there moaning on the ground [00:02:08]
I let go of the bloody rope [00:02:12]
The barrel than being heavier [00:02:15]
It started down once more [00:02:17]
And landed right across me [00:02:19]
As I lay upon the floor [00:02:21]
Well it broke three ribs[00:02:24]
And my left arm and I can only say[00:02:26]
That I hope you'll understand[00:02:31]
Why Paddy's not a work today[00:02:33]
