Believe It Or Not (1996 Digital Remaster) - Slim Dusty (西林·得斯提)[00:00:00]
He was a gun shearer a ringer of sheds[00:00:19]
Who had come to the end of his run[00:00:21]
So he let out a yell[00:00:24]
And threw down his blade[00:00:25]
The last of his ten had been done[00:00:26]
Then he went to the office[00:00:30]
And asked for his cheque[00:00:31]
And the manager paid him in cash[00:00:32]
Then he rolled up his blanket[00:00:35]
And started for home[00:00:36]
'Ere he gambled at cards and got rash[00:00:37]
He camped for the night[00:00:43]
'Neath some trees by the road[00:00:44]
Away from the cold and the damp[00:00:45]
When a swagman came out of the ev'nin' dusk[00:00:48]
And started to make up his camp[00:00:50]
Come and join me old timer the shearer said[00:00:54]
I've tucker enough here for two[00:00:57]
All my tucker bag's light[00:00:59]
The old feller said[00:01:00]
Thanks boy don't mind if I do[00:01:02]
When the meal was finished[00:01:20]
They started to talk[00:01:21]
In the way that travellers do[00:01:22]
An' the old feller said[00:01:24]
You been travellin' long[00:01:25]
Your gear an' your blankets look new[00:01:27]
No I'm not on the track the shearer said[00:01:30]
I'm a shearer just finished my run[00:01:33]
An' I've five hundred dollars[00:01:35]
In this here purse[00:01:37]
Just to prove that my job has been done[00:01:37]
Oooooh five hundred dollars[00:01:41]
The old feller said[00:01:43]
That's a lot of money me son[00:01:44]
There's many a man been murdered for less[00:01:46]
Buried some place on the run[00:01:49]
Then he went to his swag[00:01:52]
And took out a knife[00:01:53]
And also a sharpening stone[00:01:55]
As he sharpened the edge[00:01:57]
An' he looked up and said[00:01:59]
You should never have travelled alone[00:02:00]
Oh the shearer thought what a fool he'd been[00:02:06]
To open his mouth so wide[00:02:08]
He was sure[00:02:11]
The old man would wait 'til he slept[00:02:11]
An' then bury that knife in his hide[00:02:13]
So he lay in his blanket an' waited to hear[00:02:17]
The sound as the swagman slept[00:02:19]
When he heard the first snore[00:02:22]
He slipped out of bed[00:02:23]
Into the darkness he crept[00:02:24]
That he hadn't gone far[00:02:28]
When he thought he could hear[00:02:29]
Footsteps not far at the back[00:02:31]
So he quickened his pace[00:02:33]
From a walk to a trot[00:02:34]
The footsteps kept pounding the track[00:02:36]
At last he was running flat out in the dark[00:02:42]
From fear he was almost blind[00:02:44]
An' the faster he went the faster they came[00:02:47]
Those footsteps padding behind[00:02:49]
Then he stumbled and fell[00:02:55]
With a terrible thud[00:02:56]
'Cross a log that lay on the track[00:02:58]
As he lay there gasping and fancin'[00:03:00]
He felt the point of that knife in his back[00:03:02]
And there he trembled with energy spent[00:03:06]
An' he knew that his race had been run[00:03:09]
When the swagman fell over the log at his side[00:03:11]
An' whispered who's after us son[00:03:14]
Well the shearer heaved a great sigh of relief[00:03:17]
An' said no one is after us dad[00:03:20]
Well if no one's chasin' the old feller said[00:03:22]
What the hell are we runnin' fur lad[00:03:25]
