'86: How I Failed Ethics - The Magnetic Fields[00:00:00]
Written by:Stephin Merritt[00:00:01]
Though majoring in visual and environmental studies[00:00:06]
And minoring in history of sci[00:00:11]
I had to retake ethics from my Mennonite professor[00:00:16]
For whom my skepticism didn't fly[00:00:21]
The first time I made mincemeat of the standard propositions[00:00:31]
Establishing a so-called moral science[00:00:36]
And I declared morality an offshoot of aesthetics[00:00:41]
And got a failing C for my defiance[00:00:46]
So next semester I back to Divinity School trotted[00:00:56]
Proverbial tail not between my legs[00:01:01]
And spent the whole course positing my own ethical system[00:01:06]
While other college students emptied kegs[00:01:11]
Information ethics cyberethics both since taken[00:01:21]
Said[00:01:26]
Maximize the information flow[00:01:26]
Toward a hypothetical end state in which the cosmos[00:01:31]
Consists entirely of our info[00:01:36]
And at the highest level possible not only data[00:01:41]
But data about data dot dot dot[00:01:46]
Of life on top of life on top of life et cetera[00:01:51]
Profundity my mother'd say I'd not[00:01:56]
My Mennonite professor did concede I'd done the coursework[00:02:31]
Although my system left him quite dismayed[00:02:36]
Depending as it did on neither history nor Jahweh[00:02:41]
And gave me finally a passing grade[00:02:46]
