The Foggy Dew - Patsy Watchorn[00:00:00]
Written by:James McNally[00:00:01]
I was down the glen one Easter morn[00:00:10]
To a city fair rode I[00:00:15]
There armed lines of marching men[00:00:20]
In squadrons passed me by[00:00:25]
No pipe did humanna no battle drum[00:00:30]
Did sound it's loud tattoo[00:00:35]
But the Angelus Bells o'er the Liffey swells[00:00:40]
Rang out in the foggy dew[00:00:45]
Right proudly high over Dublin town[00:00:50]
They hung out a flag of war[00:00:56]
'Twas better to die 'neath that Irish sky[00:01:01]
Than at Sulva or Sud el Bar[00:01:06]
And from the plains of Royal Meath[00:01:11]
Strong men came hurrying through[00:01:16]
While Brittania's huns with their long range guns[00:01:21]
Sailed in through the foggy dew[00:01:26]
'Twas England bade our wild geese go[00:01:31]
That small nations might be free[00:01:36]
But their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves[00:01:41]
On the fringe of the gray North Sea[00:01:46]
Oh had they died by Pearse's side[00:01:51]
Or fought with Cathal Brugha[00:01:57]
Their names we'd keep where the Fenians sleep[00:02:01]
'Neath the shroud of the foggy dew[00:02:06]
But the bravest fell and the solemn bell[00:02:12]
Rang mournfully and clear[00:02:17]
For those who died that Eastertide[00:02:22]
In the springtime of the year[00:02:27]
And the world did gaze with deep amaze[00:02:32]
At those fearless men but few[00:02:37]
Who bore the fight that freedom's light[00:02:42]
Might shine through the foggy dew[00:02:47]
But down through the glen I rode again[00:02:52]
And my heart with grief was sore[00:02:58]
For I parted then with valiant men[00:03:02]
Whom I never shall see no more[00:03:08]
And to and fro in my dreams I go[00:03:13]
And I kneel and I pray for you[00:03:18]
For slavery fled oh glorious dead[00:03:23]
When you fell in the foggy dew[00:03:28]
