Moreton Bay - Bernard Fanning[00:00:00]
Written by:Traditional[00:00:00]
One Sunday morning as I went walking[00:00:06]
By Brisbane waters I chanced to stray[00:00:11]
I heard a prisoner his fate bewailing[00:00:16]
As on the sunny river bank he lay[00:00:21]
I am a native from Erin's island[00:00:25]
Transported now from my native shore[00:00:29]
They tore me from my aged parents[00:00:35]
And from the maiden whom I adore[00:00:40]
I've been a prisoner at Port Macquarie[00:00:46]
At Norfolk Island and emu plains[00:00:51]
At castle hill and cursed Toongabbie[00:00:55]
At all those settlements I've woked in chains[00:01:00]
But of all places of condemnation[00:01:05]
And penal stations of new south wales[00:01:09]
Of Moreton bay I have found no equal[00:01:14]
Excessive tyranny each day prevails[00:01:18]
For three long years I was beastly treated[00:01:25]
And heavy irons on my legs I wore[00:01:30]
My back from flogging was lacerated[00:01:34]
And often slain with my crimson gore[00:01:39]
And many a man from downright starvation[00:01:43]
Lies mouldering underneath the clay[00:01:48]
And captain logan he had us mangled[00:01:53]
At the triangles in Moreton Bay[00:01:57]
Like the Egyptians and ancient Hebrews[00:02:02]
We were oppressed under Logan's yoke[00:02:06]
Till a native black lying there in ambush[00:02:11]
Did give our tyrant his mortal stroke[00:02:15]
My fellow prisoners exhilarated[00:02:20]
That all such monsters a death shall find[00:02:24]
And when from bondage we're liberated[00:02:29]
Our former sufferings shall fade from mind[00:02:33]
