The Story Of Bo Diddley (2004 Digital Remaster) - The Animals[00:00:02]
Now let's hear the story of Bo Diddley[00:00:11]
And the rock 'n' roll scene in general[00:00:14]
Bo Diddley was born Ellis McDaniels[00:00:18]
In a place called McCoom[00:00:22]
Mississipi about 1926[00:00:24]
He moved to Chicago about 1938[00:00:28]
Where his name was eventually changed[00:00:33]
To Bo Diddley[00:00:35]
He practiced the guitar everyday and sometimes into the night[00:00:38]
Till his papa's hair began to turn white[00:00:45]
His pa said "Son listen hear I know[00:00:50]
You can stay but that guitar has just gotta go"[00:00:54]
So he pulled his hat down over his eyes[00:00:59]
Headed out for them western skies[00:01:03]
I think Bob Dylan said that[00:01:05]
He hit New York City[00:01:06]
He began to play at the Apollo in Harlem[00:01:11]
Good scene there everybody raving[00:01:14]
One day one night came a Cadillac with four head lights[00:01:18]
Came a man with a big long fat cigar[00:01:27]
Said "C'mere son I'm gonna make you a star"[00:01:29]
Bo Diddley said "Uh what's in it for me "[00:01:33]
Man said "Shut your mouth son[00:01:38]
Play the guitar and you just wait and see"[00:01:39]
Well that boy made it he made it real big[00:01:43]
And so did the rest of the rock 'n' roll scene along with him[00:01:47]
And a white guy called Johnny Otis took Bo Diddleys rhythm[00:01:52]
He changed it into handjive and it went like this[00:01:56]
In a little old country town one day[00:02:03]
A little old country band began to play[00:02:07]
Add two guitars and a beat up saxophone[00:02:10]
When the drummer said "Boy those cats begin to roam"[00:02:14]
Oh baby oh we oh oh[00:02:18]
Ooh la la that rock 'n' roll[00:02:22]
Ya hear me oh we oh oh[00:02:25]
Ooh la la that rock 'n' roll[00:02:30]
Then in the U S music scene there was big changes made[00:02:36]
Due to circumstances beyond our control such as payola[00:02:40]
The rock 'n' roll scene died after two years of solid rock[00:02:46]
And you got discs like ah[00:02:50]
"Take good care of my baby [00:02:54]
Please don't ever make her blue" and so forth[00:02:58]
About ah one year later in a place called Liverpool in England[00:03:04]
Four young guys with mop haircuts began to sing stuff like ah[00:03:10]
"It's been a hard days night[00:03:17]
And I've been workin' like a dog" and so on[00:03:21]
In a place called Richmond in Surrey [00:03:27]
Way down in the deep south[00:03:30]
They got guys with long hair down their back singin'[00:03:33]
"I wanna be your lover baby I wanna be your man yeah" [00:03:36]
And all that jazz[00:03:41]
Now we've doin' this number Bo Diddley [00:03:43]
For quite some time now[00:03:45]
Bo Diddley visited this country last year[00:03:47]
We were playin' at the club a Gogo in Newcastle [00:03:53]
Our home town[00:03:56]
And the doors opened one night and to our surprise[00:03:59]
Walked in the man himself Bo Diddley[00:04:03]
Along with him was Jerome Green his Maraca man[00:04:06]
And the Duchess his gorgeous sister[00:04:11]
And a we were doin' doin' this number[00:04:15]
Along with them came the Rolling Stones the Mersey Beats[00:04:18]
They're all standin' around diggin' it[00:04:23]
And I overheard Bo Diddley talkin'[00:04:25]
He turned around to Jermone Green[00:04:28]
And he said "Hey Jerome[00:04:29]
What do you think these guys doin' our our material "[00:04:33]
Jerome said "Uh where's the bar man [00:04:38]
Please show me to the bar"[00:04:42]
He turned around the Duchess[00:04:44]
And he said "Hey Duchess[00:04:45]
What do you think of these young guys doin' our material "[00:04:46]
She said "I don't know[00:04:49]
I only came across here to see[00:04:52]
The changin' of the guards and all that jazz"[00:04:54]
Well Bo Diddley looked up at me and he said[00:04:57]
With half closed eyes and a smile[00:05:00]
He said "Man took off his glasses"[00:05:01]
He said "Man that sure is the biggest load of rubbish[00:05:07]
I ever heard in my life"[00:05:13]
Hey Bo Diddley[00:05:16]
Oh Bo Diddley[00:05:20]
Yeah Bo Diddley[00:05:24]
Oh Bo Diddley[00:05:28]
Yeah Bo Diddley[00:05:31]
Oh Bo Diddley[00:05:35]
