The Randall Knife - Guy Clark[00:00:00]
My father had a Randall knife[00:00:30]
My mother gave it to him[00:00:33]
When he went off to WWII[00:00:37]
To save us all from ruin[00:00:40]
If you've ever held a Randall knife[00:00:46]
Then you know my father well[00:00:49]
If a better blade was ever made[00:00:53]
It was probably forged in hell[00:00:56]
My father was a good man[00:01:03]
A lawyer by his trade[00:01:06]
And only once did I ever see[00:01:10]
Him misuse the blade[00:01:12]
It almost cut his thumb off[00:01:18]
When he took it for a tool[00:01:23]
The knife was made for darker things[00:01:27]
And you could not bend the rules[00:01:31]
He let me take it camping once[00:01:36]
On a Boy Scout jamboree[00:01:40]
And I broke a half an inch off[00:01:44]
Trying to stick it in a tree[00:01:47]
I hid it from him for a while[00:01:53]
But the knife and he were one[00:01:57]
He put it in his bottom drawer[00:02:01]
Without a hard word one[00:02:04]
There it slept and there it stayed[00:02:10]
For twenty some odd years[00:02:14]
Sort of like Excalibur[00:02:18]
Except waiting for a tear[00:02:21]
My father died when I was forty[00:02:57]
And I couldn't find a way to cry[00:03:00]
Not because I didn't love him[00:03:04]
Not because he didn't try[00:03:08]
I'd cried for every lesser thing[00:03:13]
Whiskey pain and beauty[00:03:17]
But he deserved a better tear[00:03:22]
And I was not quite ready[00:03:24]
So we took his ashed out to sea[00:03:31]
And poured 'em off the stern[00:03:35]
And threw the roses in the wake[00:03:39]
Of everything we'd learned[00:03:42]
When we got back to the house[00:03:48]
They asked me what I wanted[00:03:52]
Not the lawbooks not the watch[00:03:56]
I need the things he's haunted[00:03:59]
My hand burned for the Randall knife[00:04:04]
There in the bottom drawer[00:04:09]
And I found a tear for my father's life[00:04:13]
And all that it stood for[00:04:16]
