[00:00:01] Chocolate - Tindersticks [00:00:25] It had been the perfect Friday afternoon [00:00:27] The job was almost done [00:00:30] The house we were decorating was owned by a little old man [00:00:33] Forever in the same three piece suit [00:00:35] He'd probabbly had since he was demobbed [00:00:37] He seemed to be forever on his way to the post office [00:00:40] Carrying brown paper ansd string wrapped parcels under his arm [00:00:45] He'd bring us out china cups of camp coffee [00:00:46] And plates of custard cream biscuits [00:00:50] The house had belonged to his parents [00:00:52] Who had both passed away within weeks of each other [00:00:54] A few years back [00:00:56] They were the only people he had ever lived with [00:00:58] This was the only house he had ever lived in [00:01:01] I wondered what would happen to the house when he's gone [00:01:06] It was a short walk to my bedsit [00:01:08] Once a similar house to the old man's [00:01:10] now broken into lots of single room accomodation [00:01:15] It also once had a great garden like his [00:01:17] Now occupied by one-storey modern block building [00:01:20] Containing the dentist and chiropodist [00:01:25] In my room was an electric cooker [00:01:27] Which I only used in winter to keep warm [00:01:29] Next to that was a sink with a glass shelf above it [00:01:32] on which was a toothbrush and carton of marlboro's [00:01:36] There was a table with a chair in one corner [00:01:38] A single bed in the other [00:01:40] And about four sq ft in the middle [00:01:44] There was a wooden drawer [00:01:45] Under the bed with most of my clothes in [00:01:47] The rest was over the back of the chair [00:01:50] I had a record player on a table [00:01:52] And boxes of records underneath [00:01:57] The bathroom for the first [00:01:58] And the second floor was opposite my room [00:02:00] It had a meter for the water [00:02:02] Which took two 50pence pieces [00:02:04] You'd have to wait half an hour for the water to heat up [00:02:07] And keep an eye on the door [00:02:10] In case some sod pinched your bath [00:02:14] There was one toilet upstairs and one outside [00:02:16] But no one used the outside one anymore [00:02:19] So it was where the local prostitutes would take their clients for a quickie [00:02:24] I'd spend as little time as I could in my room [00:02:27] My skin was still warm and soft from the bath as I walked into town [00:03:02] So I was sat on my usual bar stool in my usual pub by 6 30 [00:03:06] The usual twelve or so regulars in at this time of the evening [00:03:09] Nice and relaxed before the post 8 00 crush [00:03:14] We'd crowd around the tiny bar then pool tables [00:03:17] The house rule for fool was winner stays on [00:03:20] You'd chalk your name on the balckboard [00:03:21] And wait your turn [00:03:23] The challenger would pay for the game [00:03:25] So if you were good [00:03:26] You 'd play all night [00:03:27] Tonight I was great [00:03:30] She walked into the pool room just as I potted the black [00:03:33] The next name on the list [00:03:35] Bent down to the slot on the table and put coins in [00:03:37] I was used to seeing her surrounded by burgundy flocked wallpaper [00:03:41] And red velvet upholstery in the sunday night pub around the corner; [00:03:47] She looked different stood here in the pool room [00:03:49] She looked good she was looking at me [00:03:52] I ended the game as quickly as I could [00:03:54] Without losing badly and stood near her [00:03:58] "Would you like a drink " she asked [00:03:59] "I get them What do you want " I replied [00:04:02] "The same as you're having" she said [00:04:04] The great thing about being a regular [00:04:06] When the bars turned deep is it only takes a raised eyebrow [00:04:09] And a couple of nods [00:04:10] And two bottles of Holster Pils had been passed over people's heads to you [00:04:15] We did the pool room dance for a while [00:04:17] Moving to" excuse me"'s bending around elbows 404
