[00:00:10] The cat of the railway train
[00:00:16] There's a whisper down the line at eleven thirty nine
[00:00:19] When the night mail's ready to depart
[00:00:22] Saying Skimble where is Skimble
[00:00:24] Has he gone to hunt the thimble
[00:00:25] We must find him or the train can't start
[00:00:29] All the guards and all the porters
[00:00:31] And the station master's daughters
[00:00:32] Would be searching high and low
[00:00:36] Saying Skimble where is Skimble for unless he's very nimble
[00:00:39] Then the night mail just can't go
[00:00:42] At eleven forty two with the signal overdue
[00:00:46] And the passengers all frantic to a man
[00:00:49] That's when I would appear and I'd saunter to the rear
[00:00:52] I'd been busy in the luggage van
[00:00:57] Then he gave one flash of his glass green eyes
[00:01:00] And the signal went all clear
[00:01:04] They'd be off at last for the northern part of the northern hemisphere
[00:01:09] Skimbleshanks the railway cat
[00:01:14] The cat of the railway train
[00:01:20] You could say that by and large it was me who was in charge
[00:01:23] Of the sleeping car express
[00:01:26] From the driver and the guards to the bagmen playing cards
[00:01:30] I would supervise them all more or less
[00:01:33] Down the corridor he paces and examines all the faces
[00:01:36] Of the travellers in the first and the third
[00:01:40] He establishes control by a regular patrol
[00:01:43] And he'd know at once if anything occurred
[00:01:46] He would watch you without winking
[00:01:48] And he saw what you were thinking
[00:01:50] And it's certain that he didn't approve
[00:01:53] Of hilarity and riot so the folk were very quiet
[00:01:56] When Skimble was about and on the move
[00:02:01] You could play no pranks with Skimbleshanks
[00:02:05] He's a cat that cannot be ignored
[00:02:08] So nothing went wrong on the northern mail
[00:02:11] When Skimbleshanks was aboard
[00:02:17] It was very pleasant when they'd found their little den
[00:02:20] With their name written up on the door
[00:02:23] And the berth was very neat with a newly folded sheet
[00:02:27] And not a speck of dust upon the floor
[00:02:30] There was every sort of light
[00:02:31] You could make it dark or bright
[00:02:33] And a button you could turn to make a breeze
[00:02:36] And a funny little basin you're supposed to wash your face in
[00:02:40] And a crank to shut the window should you sneeze
[00:02:43] Then the guard looked in politely
[00:02:45] And would ask you very brightly
[00:02:47] Do you like your morning tea weak or strong
[00:02:50] But I was just behind him and was ready to remind him
[00:02:53] For Skimble won't let anything go wrong
[00:02:58] When they crept into their cosy berth
[00:03:01] And pulled up the counterpane
[00:03:05] They all could reflect that it was very nice
[00:03:08] To know that they wouldn't be bothered by mice
[00:03:11] They can leave all that to the railway cat
[00:03:15] The cat of the railway train
[00:03:18] Skimbleshanks the railway cat
[00:03:23] The cat of the railway train
[00:03:28] In the watches of the night I was always fresh and bright
[00:03:31] Every now and then I'd have a cup of tea
[00:03:35] With perhaps a drop of scotch while I was keeping on the watch
[00:03:38] Only stopping here and there to catch a flea
[00:03:41] They were fast asleep at Crewe and so they never knew
[00:03:45] That I was walking up and down the station
[00:03:48] They were sleeping all the while I was busy at Carlisle
[00:03:51] Where I met the station master with elation
[00:03:55] They might see me at Dumfries if I summoned the police
[00:03:58] If there was anything they ought to know about
[00:04:01] When they got to Gallowgate there they did not have to wait
[00:04:05] For Skimbleshanks would help them to get out
[00:04:13] And he gives a wave of his long brown tail
[00:04:17] Which says I'll see you again
[00:04:21] You'll meet without fail on the midnight mail
