[00:00:00] What Made America Famous - Harry Chapin [00:00:13] It was the town that made America famous [00:00:20] The churches full and the kids all gone to hell [00:00:26] Six traffic lights and seven cops [00:00:29] And all the streets kept clean [00:00:32] The supermarket and the drug store [00:00:35] And the bars all doing well [00:00:40] Now they were the folks that made America famous [00:00:46] The local fire department stocked [00:00:49] With shorthaired volunteers [00:00:53] And on Saturday night while America boozes [00:00:56] The fire department showed dirty movies [00:00:59] The lawyer and the grocer seeing their dreams [00:01:02] Come to life on the movie screens [00:01:05] While the plumber hopes that he won't be seen [00:01:08] As he tries to hide his fears and he wipes away his tears [00:01:17] But something's burning somewhere [00:01:20] Does anybody care [00:01:28] We were the kids that made America famous [00:01:34] The kind of kids that long since drove our parents to despair [00:01:40] We were lazy long hairs dropping out lost confused [00:01:45] And copping out [00:01:47] Convinced our futures were in doubt [00:01:50] And trying not to care [00:01:55] We lived in the house that made America famous [00:02:01] It was a rundown slum the shame of [00:02:03] All the decent folks in town [00:02:07] We hippies and some welfare cases [00:02:10] Crowded families with coal black faces [00:02:14] Cramped inside some cracked old boards [00:02:16] The best that we all could afford [00:02:19] But still too fine for the rich landlord [00:02:22] To ever tear it down and we could hear the sound [00:02:28] Of something burning somewhere Is anybody there [00:02:40] We all lived the life that made America famous [00:02:46] The cops would make a point to shadow us around our town [00:02:52] And we "love children" put a swastika [00:02:55] On the bright red firehouse door [00:02:59] America the beautiful it makes a body proud [00:03:10] And then came the night that made America famous [00:03:16] Was it carelessness or someone's sick idea of a joke [00:03:22] In the tinderbox trap that we hippies lived in [00:03:25] Someone struck a spark [00:03:28] At first I thought that I was dreaming [00:03:31] Then I saw the first flames gleaming [00:03:34] And heard the sound of children screaming [00:03:38] Coming through the smoke [00:03:42] And Something's burning somewhere Does anybody care [00:03:53] It was the fire that made America famous [00:03:59] The sirens wailed and [00:04:01] The firemen stumbled sleepy from their homes [00:04:05] And the plumber yelled: "Come on let's go " [00:04:08] They saw what was burning and said: "Take it slow [00:04:11] Let 'em sweat a little they'll never know [00:04:14] And besides we just cleaned the chrome " [00:04:18] Said the plumber: "Then I'm going alone " [00:04:25] Well he rolled on up in the fire truck [00:04:28] And raised the ladder to the ledge [00:04:31] Where me and my girl and a couple of kids [00:04:34] Were clinging like bats to the edge [00:04:39] We staggered to salvation [00:04:42] Collapsed on the street [00:04:44] And I never thought that a fat man's face [00:04:47] Would ever look so sweet [00:04:56] I shook his hand in the scene that made America famous [00:05:04] And a smile from the heart that made America great [00:05:11] We spent the rest of that night [00:05:13] In the home of this man that we never known before [00:05:19] It's funny when you get that close [00:05:22] It's kind of hard to hate [00:05:31] I went to sleep with the hope that made America famous [00:05:37] I had the kind of a dream that maybe [00:05:40] They're still trying to teach in school [00:05:44] Of the America that made America famous and [00:05:51] Of the people who just might understand [00:05:55] That how together yes we can [00:05:58] Create a country better than [00:06:01] The one we have made of this land [00:06:05] We have a choice to make each man [00:06:08] Who dares to dream reaching out his hand
