[00:00:11] It walked with arms hanging
[00:00:13] Wanted the stream to be a river and the river a torrent
[00:00:16] And this puddle the sea

[00:00:19] It didn't know it was a child
[00:00:21] Everything for it was filled with life and all life was one
[00:00:25] Saw the horizon without trying to reach it
[00:00:27] Couldn't rush itself and think on command
[00:00:29] Was often terribly bored and couldn't wait
[00:00:32] Passed up greeting the moments
[00:00:33] And prayed only with its lips
[00:00:35] When the child was a child
[00:00:36] It didn't have an opinion about a thing and no habits
[00:00:39] Often sat crossed legged took off running
[00:00:41] Had a cow lick in its hair and didn't put on a face when photographed
[00:00:51] When the child was a child
[00:00:52] It was the time of the following questions
[00:00:54] Why am I me and why not you
[00:00:56] Why am I here and why not there
[00:00:58] Why did time begin and where does space end
[00:01:00] Isn't what I see and hear and smell
[00:01:02] Just the appearance of the world in front of the world
[00:01:04] Isn't life under the sun just a dream
[00:01:06] Does evil actually exist in people
[00:01:08] Who really are evil why can't it be that I who am
[00:01:11] Wasn't before I was and that sometime I the I I am
[00:01:14] No longer will be the I I am
[00:01:25] When the child was a child
[00:01:26] It gagged on spinach on peason rice pudding
[00:01:28] And on steamed cauliflower
[00:01:30] And now eats all of it and not just because it has to
[00:01:32] When the child was a child
[00:01:33] It woke up once in a strange bed
[00:01:35] And now time and time again
[00:01:37] Many people seem beautiful to it
[00:01:38] And now not so many and now only if it's lucky
[00:01:41] It had a precise picture of paradise
[00:01:43] And now can only vaguely conceive of it at best
[00:01:46] It couldn't imagine nothingness
[00:01:47] And today shudders in the face of it
[00:01:49] Go for the ball which today rolls between its legs
[00:01:52] With its I'm here it came
[00:01:54] Into the house which now is empty
[00:01:56] When the child was a child it played with enthusiasm
[00:01:58] And now only with such former concentration
[00:02:00] Where its work is concerned
[00:02:02] When the game task activity subject happens to be its work
[00:02:13] When the child was a child
[00:02:14] It was enough to live on apples and bread and it's still that way
[00:02:17] When the child was a child berries fell
[00:02:19] Only like berries into its hand and still do
[00:02:22] The fresh walnuts made its tongue raw and still do
[00:02:25] Atop each mountain it craved
[00:02:27] Yet a higher mountain and in each city it craved
[00:02:29] Yet a bigger city and still does
[00:02:31] Reach for the cherries in the treetop
[00:02:33] As elated as it still is today
[00:02:35] Was shy in front of strangers and still is
[00:02:37] It waited for the first snow and still waits that way
[00:02:39] When the child was a child
[00:02:40] It waited restlessly each day for the return of the loved one
[00:02:43] And still waits that way when the child was a child
[00:02:46] It hurled a stick like a lance into a tree
[00:02:48] And it's still quivering there today
