[00:00:55] Long ago we rode together
[00:00:58] We'd ridden side by side
[00:01:02] I loved him like a brother
[00:01:05] And I wept when Utah died
[00:01:11] While riding up one morning
[00:01:14] And our work was almost done
[00:01:19] The cattle quickly started
[00:01:22] On a wild and maddening run
[00:01:26] The boss's little daughter
[00:01:29] Who was riding on that side
[00:01:33] Rushed in to stop the stampede
[00:01:36] It was there my partner died
[00:01:42] Lenore upon her pony
[00:01:46] Tried to turn the cattle right
[00:01:49] But her blanket slipped beneath her
[00:01:53] And she caught and held on tight
[00:01:57] When we all saw that red blanket
[00:02:00] Each cowboy held his breath
[00:02:04] For should her pony fail her
[00:02:07] None could save the girl from death
[00:02:13] When the cattle saw the blanket
[00:02:17] Almost dragging on the ground
[00:02:20] They were maddened in a moment
[00:02:24] And they charged with deafening sound
[00:02:28] The girl soon saw her danger
[00:02:31] And she turned her pony's face
[00:02:35] And bending in her saddle
[00:02:38] Tried the blanket to replace
[00:02:44] Just then she lost her balance
[00:02:47] In the front of that wild tide
[00:02:51] Carroll's voice controlled the round up
[00:02:55] Lie still Lenore he cried
[00:02:59] And then close up beside her
[00:03:02] Came Utah riding fast
[00:03:06] Little did the poor boy know
[00:03:09] The ride would be his last
[00:03:15] Full often from the saddle
[00:03:18] He had caught the trailing rope
[00:03:22] To pick her up at full speed
[00:03:26] Was now his only hope
[00:03:30] He swung low from his saddle
[00:03:33] To take her to his arm
[00:03:37] We thought that he'd succeeded
[00:03:40] That the girl was safe from harm
[00:03:46] But such a strain upon his saddle
[00:03:50] Had ne'er been put before
[00:03:53] And the cinches gave beneath him
[00:03:56] And he fell beside Lenore
[00:04:00] When the girl fell from her saddle
[00:04:04] She had dragged the blanket down
[00:04:08] It lay there close beside them
[00:04:11] Where they lay upon the ground
[00:04:17] Utah took the blanket
[00:04:21] And to Lenore he said
[00:04:24] Lie still and quickly running
[00:04:27] Waved the red thing o'er his head
[00:04:32] He turned the maddened cattle
[00:04:35] From Lenore his little friend
[00:04:38] And as the mighty herd rushed toward him
[00:04:42] He turned to met his end
[00:04:48] And as the herd came on him
[00:04:51] His weapon quickly drew
[00:04:55] He was bound to die defended
[00:04:59] As all brave cowboys do
[00:05:02] The weapon flashed like lightning
[00:05:05] And it sounded loud and clear
[00:05:09] As the cattle rushed and killed him
[00:05:13] He dropped the leading steer
[00:05:18] When I broke through that wide circle
[00:05:22] To where poor Utah lay
[00:05:26] With a thousand wounds and bruises
[00:05:30] His life blood ebbed away
[00:05:33] I knelt down close beside him
[00:05:36] And I knew that all was o'er
[00:05:40] As I heard him faintly whisper
[00:05:44] Good-bye my sweet Lenore
[00:05:50] Next morning at the churchyard
[00:05:53] I heard the preacher say
[00:05:57] Don't think our kind friend Utah
[00:06:00] Was lost on that great day
[00:06:04] He was a much-loved cowboy
[00:06:08] And not afraid to die
[00:06:11] And we'll meet him at the round up
[00:06:15] On the plains beyond the sky
