[00:00:08] When the lights went out everything changed
[00:00:10] The radio music made me feel strange
[00:00:13] And I had a real bad dream about
[00:00:14] A gorilla in the bathroom
[00:00:17] Back when I was 6 and
[00:00:18] I took some things real serious
[00:00:20] And I thought that every
[00:00:22] Song that came on the radio
[00:00:24] Was referring to strange sexual acts
[00:00:27] Because they thought I wouldn't know the facts
[00:00:29] And being small is hard and
[00:00:31] No one ever tells you how
[00:00:33] And back when I was 8 I
[00:00:35] Would sit outside on an old milk crate
[00:00:37] And look out at the world from
[00:00:39] The stoop across the street
[00:00:40] The boomboxes and the hot concrete
[00:00:43] And every Halloween they hung
[00:00:45] A million rubber skeletons across ninth street
[00:00:49] And back when I was 12 or so
[00:00:51] I swear to god I never felt so low
[00:00:53] Everyone but me was
[00:00:54] Making out and eating cookies
[00:00:57] I had more than my brain could stand
[00:00:59] I threw my life in a garbage can
[00:01:01] I felt so weird
[00:01:02] I had to disappear
[00:01:02] In crying suicide disease
[00:01:05] At 15 getting stoned felt good
[00:01:07] And it sent me back to childhood
[00:01:09] And nothing ever mattered to me more than that
[00:01:12] But then 16 became eclipse
[00:01:15] My brain became apocalypse
[00:01:16] I was lost and found and
[00:01:18] I've never been the same
[00:01:21] And back when I was 22
[00:01:22] I left the best thing that I knew
[00:01:24] And I gave it up for fortune and for fame
[00:01:29] I played like I didn't know how
[00:01:30] I shocked the world
[00:01:32] I wowed the crowd
[00:01:33] But I deserved more than what they gave
[00:01:37] Back when I was 27 still nothing had been forgiven
[00:01:40] Clay turns into rock and rock just sits
[00:01:45] So sitting on a crowded beach
[00:01:46] I'd pretend I was a leech
[00:01:48] And I'd stick to things here and there for a little bit
[00:01:53] And back when I was 31 I knew
[00:01:54] I'd become what I'd become
[00:01:56] Nothing left to reveal
[00:01:58] And there was nowhere else to turn
[00:02:00] So shocked and withered dumb and bitter
[00:02:02] And in need of a babysitter
[00:02:04] I'd gladly let my hand fall off and burn burn burn
[00:02:09] Back when I turned the big 4-0
[00:02:11] I realized just how much there was to go
[00:02:13] And I started to think that being alone forever
[00:02:15] Wasn't where it was at
[00:02:17] So I took my head out of the window
[00:02:18] And I taught myself how to love real fast
[00:02:20] I started talking about painting
[00:02:22] With a woman in the laundromat
[00:02:25] And back when I was 50
[00:02:26] And my first wife had just left me
[00:02:29] I felt okay and I sang my daughter
[00:02:31] Funny little songs
[00:02:33] And just when I thought the best was past
[00:02:35] I fell in love for real at last
[00:02:37] And it didn't even matter
[00:02:38] That it had taken me so long
[00:02:41] And back when I was 63 the public rediscovered me
[00:02:44] My comic books and albums had
[00:02:46] All become rare cult-collector items
[00:02:48] And both my parents were deceased
[00:02:51] So they didn't see my records get re-released
[00:02:53] And I got a dog for the first time in my life
[00:02:57] And back when I was 74 my
[00:02:59] Dog died and I got two more
[00:03:01] I still felt really good about my daughter
[00:03:03] And also about my girlfriend
[00:03:05] And I would sing and draw a little bit
[00:03:07] But mostly I'd just wake up early and sit
[00:03:09] And hang out with the puppies
[00:03:11] And wish that I could live forever
[00:03:13] And back when I was 87 and my
[00:03:15] Grandson had just turned eleven
[00:03:17] My woman was dead
[00:03:18] And my dogs were getting pretty old
