[00:00:00] Stained Glass - Danny Schmidt [00:00:15] It was thirty days til Easter [00:00:16] When the elm tree hit the church [00:00:19] Thank God it fell on Friday [00:00:20] Cause at least no one was hurt [00:00:23] But there was fear it might delay [00:00:25] The second coming of the lord [00:00:27] Cause the stained glass crucifixion [00:00:29] Was in stains upon the floor [00:00:46] They spent a day of cleaning [00:00:47] And a day to board the hole [00:00:50] Where the stained glass once [00:00:51] Had cast a godly light upon the fold [00:00:54] But come the Sunday service [00:00:56] All the faces now were gray [00:00:58] And they commenced to [00:00:59] Take donations as the faithful knelt to pray [00:01:17] But on Monday they discovered [00:01:19] That the man who'd built the glass [00:01:21] Was the only man in town [00:01:23] Who could and sadly he had passed [00:01:26] But his father who was ninety [00:01:27] Said the tools were in the shed [00:01:29] And he'd kindly try [00:01:31] And resurrect the window from the dead [00:01:49] The congregation argued [00:01:50] But the wise ones all rejoiced [00:01:53] In the one hand was solution [00:01:55] In the other was no choice [00:01:57] And they gave the man their blessings [00:01:59] And they gave his hand a shake [00:02:01] And they gave him all the coins they [00:02:03] Had collected on their plate [00:02:20] It was seven days til Easter [00:02:22] And they'd seen a hide nor hair [00:02:25] So they came and knocked [00:02:26] At suppertime in hopes the man was there [00:02:29] But a banging from the basement [00:02:31] Was 'bout all that they could hear [00:02:33] And curses that might [00:02:34] Make the devil blush and wash his ears [00:02:52] Come first thing easter morning [00:02:53] And to everyone's good grace [00:02:56] The man was up on ladders [00:02:58] With the window nailed in place [00:03:00] It was covered in black velvet [00:03:02] Like a hood or like a veil [00:03:04] He pulled the sheet and there [00:03:06] It hung apocryphal and frail [00:03:23] The seams had melted jagged [00:03:24] They were crooked like a spine [00:03:27] The glass was rough like hands of man [00:03:29] Against the hands of time [00:03:32] And there was bloodstains in the red [00:03:33] And there were teardrops in the blue [00:03:36] He said: It may not be the best [00:03:37] But it's the best that I can do [00:03:54] The chapel fell to silence [00:03:56] It was more than just surprise [00:03:59] As the monstrosity of color slid [00:04:01] Its tongue across their eyes [00:04:04] And they shivered from exposure [00:04:05] Like babies born again [00:04:08] Cause in every pane of glass [00:04:10] Was all the joy and pain of man [00:04:25] There was every fearful smile [00:04:27] There was every joyful tear [00:04:30] There was each and every choice [00:04:32] That leads from every there to here [00:04:34] There was every cosy stranger [00:04:37] And every awkward friend [00:04:39] And there was every perfect night [00:04:41] That's left initials in the sand [00:04:44] There was every day that filled so full [00:04:46] The weeks would float away [00:04:47] And there was all those days spent wondering [00:04:49] What to do with all those days [00:04:52] There was every lie that ever [00:04:53] Saved the truth from being shamed [00:04:55] And every secret you could [00:04:57] Ever trust a friend to hide away [00:04:59] There was the fortune of [00:05:00] Discovering a new face you might adore [00:05:03] And the thrill of coming home [00:05:04] To find her clothes upon the floor [00:05:07] And the prideful immortality [00:05:09] Of children in the home [00:05:11] That the storm can't grind the mountain down [00:05:13] It can only shift the stones [00:05:15] And there was everything your mouth [00:05:16] Says that your lips don't understand [00:05:18] And every shape inside your head [00:05:20] You can't carve with your hands [00:05:22] And every slice of glass revealed [00:05:24] Another slice of life [00:05:26] Emblazened imperfections [00:05:28] In a perfect stream of light
