[00:00:00] Anne Braden (Album Version) - Flobots [00:00:00] What Ive realized since is [00:00:01] That it is a very painful process [00:00:03] But it is not destructive [00:00:05] Its the world deliberation [00:00:07] That what really happened in the '60s [00:00:09] Was that this country took just the first step [00:00:11] Toward admittin that it had been wrong on race [00:00:15] And creativity burst out in all directions [00:00:18] From the color of the faces in Sunday songs [00:00:20] To the hatred they raised all the youngsters on [00:00:22] Once upon a time in this country long ago [00:00:24] She knew there was somethin wrong [00:00:26] Because the song said yellow red black and white [00:00:28] Everyone precious in the path of Christ [00:00:30] But what about the daughter of the woman cleanin their house [00:00:32] Wasnt she a child they were singin about [00:00:34] And if Jesus loves us black and white skin [00:00:36] Why didn't her white mother invite them in [00:00:38] When did it become a room for no blacks to step in [00:00:40] How did she already know not to ask the question [00:00:42] Left lastin impressions [00:00:44] Adolescences comforts gone [00:00:46] She never thought things would ever change [00:00:48] But she always knew there was somethin wrong [00:00:50] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:00:58] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:01:06] Years later she found herself Mississippi bound [00:01:10] To help stop the legalized lynchin of Mr Willie McGee [00:01:14] But they couldnt stop it so they thought [00:01:16] That theyd talk to the governor about what happened and say [00:01:18] Were tired of bein used as an excuse to kill black men [00:01:22] But the cops wouldnt let em past [00:01:24] And these women they struck em as uppity [00:01:26] So they hauled em all off to jail [00:01:28] And they called it protective custody [00:01:30] Then from her cell she heard her jailers grumblin about outsiders [00:01:34] When she called him out and said she was from the South [00:01:37] They shouted Why is a nice Southern lady [00:01:39] Makin trouble for the governor [00:01:41] She said I guess I'm not your type of lady [00:01:44] And I guess I'm not your type of Southerner [00:01:46] But before you call me traitor well its plainest just to say [00:01:49] I was a child in Mississippi but I'm ashamed of it today [00:01:54] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:02:02] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:02:10] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:02:18] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:02:23] And all of a sudden I realized that I was on the other side [00:02:26] Imagine the world that youre standin within [00:02:28] All of your neighbors and family friends [00:02:30] How would you cope facin the fact [00:02:31] The flesh on their hands was tainted with sin [00:02:34] She faced this every day [00:02:36] In people she saw on a regular basis [00:02:37] People she loved in several cases [00:02:39] People she knew were incredibly racist [00:02:41] It was painful but she never stopped lovin them [00:02:44] Never stopped callin their names [00:02:46] And she never stopped bein a Southern woman [00:02:48] And she never stopped fightin for change [00:02:50] And she saw that her struggle was in the tradition [00:02:52] Of ancestors never aware of her [00:02:53] It continues today the soul of a Southerner [00:02:56] Born of the other America [00:02:58] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:03:06] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:03:13] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:03:22] She always knew there was somethin wrong [00:03:31] What you win in the immediate battles is [00:03:34] Is little compared to the effort you put into it [00:03:36] But if you see that as a part [00:03:38] Of this total movement to build a new world [00:03:40] You know what cathedral you're buildin [00:03:42] When you put your stone in [00:04:02] You do have a choice [00:04:05] You don't have to be a part of the world of the lynchers 404
