Wasteland - Dan Bern[00:00:00]
I saw the best of my[00:00:16]
Generation playing pinball[00:00:17]
Maked up and caked up[00:00:22]
And looking like some[00:00:23]
Kind of china doll[00:00:24]
With all of Adolf Hitler's moves down cold[00:00:29]
As they stood up in front[00:00:32]
Of a Rock and Roll band[00:00:33]
And always moving[00:00:39]
Upward and ever upward[00:00:40]
To this gentle golden promised land[00:00:42]
With the smartest of them all[00:00:49]
Moonlighting as a word processor[00:00:51]
And the strongest of them all[00:00:53]
Checking IDs outside saloons[00:00:55]
And the prettiest of[00:00:57]
All taking off her clothes[00:00:59]
In front of men whose eyes look like[00:01:01]
They were in some little hick town[00:01:03]
Near Omaha watching the police chief[00:01:05]
Run his car off the side of a bridge[00:01:08]
I saw men with dreams[00:01:13]
Like the ones I'd had[00:01:15]
Beg quarters outside the Seven-Eleven[00:01:17]
Till it got so they didn't affect me anymore[00:01:20]
Than the mailboxes I'd passed[00:01:22]
'Cept that sometimes [00:01:24]
I'd put somthing in the mailbox[00:01:25]
I'd had the wind at my back[00:01:32]
Now I felt it cold in my face[00:01:35]
And for an awful long time now[00:01:37]
You were the only one[00:01:40]
Who ever called me late at night[00:01:41]
And I really never noticed[00:01:43]
Till after you stopped calling[00:01:44]
And the emptiness [00:01:46]
Silence got so heavy[00:01:48]
Broken up in the wasteland [00:01:56]
Broken up in the promised land[00:02:00]
Broken up in Disneyland [00:02:03]
Broken up in the plastic land[00:02:07]
Broken up in the wasteland [00:02:11]
Broken up in the wasteland[00:02:14]
Broken up in the wasteland[00:02:17]
I saw dead Marilyn Monroe[00:02:27]
Strung up on every[00:02:29]
Street corner in Hollywood[00:02:30]
Like some two bit[00:02:31]
Whore offering a discount rate[00:02:32]
And I wondered how Joe Dimaggio felt[00:02:35]
I saw dead James Dean's ghost[00:02:39]
Wandering the sidewalk looking troubled[00:02:42]
And I wondered how his mama felt[00:02:45]
I saw signs that said [00:02:50]
"Headshots done for cheap"[00:02:51]
Signs that said "Extras wanted top dollars paid"[00:02:53]
Signs for 'Haircuts' and signs for 'Manicures'[00:02:56]
And signs for "Tanning salons"[00:03:00]
And signs for 'Wardrobe specialists[00:03:02]
Signs for "Cosmetic surgery'[00:03:04]
And signs for 'Assertiveness training'[00:03:06]
And I stopped to read them all[00:03:07]
And every single block[00:03:11]
Looked like every single block[00:03:12]
Looked like every single[00:03:14]
Block looked like every single block[00:03:15]
But she kept driving[00:03:18]
'Cause everyone else kept driving[00:03:20]
And 'cause gridlock is evil and[00:03:22]
Not knowing anywhere is evil[00:03:24]
And those who had money looked good[00:03:29]
But weren't too happy and[00:03:31]
Those who didn't have money[00:03:32]
Didn't look so good[00:03:34]
And weren't too happy either[00:03:34]
And in a city of three million [00:03:36]
Two hundred and sixty nine thousand[00:03:37]
Nine hundred eighty four [00:03:40]
Everyone was lonely[00:03:41]
Broken up in the wasteland [00:03:48]
Broken up in the promised land[00:03:52]
Broken up in Disneyland [00:03:55]
Broken up in the plastic land[00:03:59]
Broken up in the wasteland [00:04:03]
Broken up in the wasteland[00:04:06]
Broken up in the wasteland[00:04:09]
And I watched as everyone[00:04:19]
I knew spent their lives[00:04:22]
Trying to be watched on stage[00:04:24]
Watched on film or listened to on a record[00:04:26]
And they thought [00:04:29]
"Well maybe that way[00:04:30]
I could get a little love out of this life"[00:04:31]
And I watched as the best of my generation[00:04:35]
Abandoned their dreams and[00:04:39]
Settled for making a little money[00:04:41]
I watched TV read the papers [00:04:45]
Listend to the radio[00:04:49]
And made all the fancy scenes[00:04:50]
And said all the right words[00:04:52]
And wore all the right clothes[00:04:54]
And knew the names of the hip people[00:04:55]
But I still felt out of touch[00:04:58]
So I stopped watching TV[00:05:00]
And reading the papers and[00:05:01]
Listening to the radio[00:05:03]
And making the fancy scenes[00:05:04]
And saying the right words[00:05:06]
And wearing the right clothes[00:05:08]
And knowing the names of the hip people[00:05:09]
And I felt more out of touch[00:05:11]
Than ever but I didn't care anymore[00:05:13]
And I felt you slipping away and[00:05:20]
I felt myself slipping from you[00:05:23]
And I wanted more than anything else[00:05:26]
For it to rain for one whole day like it used to[00:05:27]
But all there ever was was sun [00:05:31]
Relentless sun hot beating sun[00:05:33]
And everyone wore their sunglasses[00:05:36]
And walked around like[00:05:38]
Flies under magnifying glass[00:05:39]
With their eyes removed[00:05:41]
Broken up in the wasteland [00:05:48]
Broken up in the promised land[00:05:51]
Broken up in Disneyland [00:05:54]
Broken up in the plastic land[00:05:58]
Broken up in the wasteland [00:06:02]
Broken up in the wasteland[00:06:05]
Broken up in the wasteland [00:06:09]
Broken up in the wasteland[00:06:12]
Broken up in the wasteland[00:06:15]
