Mister Charlie

Mister Charlie - Lightnin' Hopkins (莱克林·霍普金斯)[00:00:00]

Once in the country there was a little boy;[00:00:02]

Every morning that he would go to the table with his little two sisters and brothers,[00:00:03]

You know,[00:00:06]

He would go there,[00:00:12]

He couldn't talk but his mother didn't know what was wrong with him so... she would go to the table in the morning,[00:00:19]

She would fix for breakfast,[00:00:24]

She'd fix toast and coffee,[00:00:25]

Enough, coffee for the tin,[00:00:26]

Toast for the eggs for the church,[00:00:28]

Then she would ask and say, "what you want this morning?"[00:00:32]

Oh mama, toast and milk,[00:00:36]

You know things like that you know.[00:00:37]

But the little old boy he couldn't talk good,[00:00:39]

So she asked him say "what you want son"?[00:00:43]

Said "sa-sa-a I want-t t-t-t-" She said "Hush".[00:00:45]

Say "I tell you what to do.[00:00:46]

You just hush, I just go bring you what I bring the rest of 'em,[00:00:48]

Cause one of these days I'm gonna learn you how to talk."[00:00:51]

She goin' back and she fixes,[00:00:54]

The next morning same thing.[00:00:55]

"So what would you children want this morning?"[00:00:56]

"Butter 'n toast mama." Get around to the little old boy,[00:00:58]

Say "What you want"? He say, "bu-bu-bu- bu-bu-bu..."[00:01:03]

She say "Lord, have mercy,[00:01:10]

" that's what mama said and she walked away,[00:01:13]

Say "wonder what's wrong with my child?"[00:01:15]

He heard her.[00:01:17]

But you know the little boy couldn't do no better.[00:01:17]

So after he'd find out that mama couldn't understand him,[00:01:19]

And he couldn't understand the way his mama was doin' him,[00:01:22]

He packed up his little flower sack, and he decide that he would leave.[00:01:25]

So when he left, on his way,[00:01:30]

He run up on a old rollin' mill,[00:01:31]

What they call Mister Charlie's.[00:01:34]

So he walked up to mister Charlie,[00:01:35]

Mister Charlie was workin' round in his rose bushes 'n things... so he taps him: "mi-mi-mi..." say "Mister!" But he didn't know his name that time.[00:01:39]

The man straightened up and said "my name is mister Charlie".[00:01:51]

He say "mi-mi-ch-ch-ch-ch-" He said "but boy I ain't got to fool with you, you can't work."[00:01:53]

He said, "me-me can work!"[00:01:56]

So the man went on workin' and he'd tap him again.[00:01:57]

He said "me-me-me wanna home". He said "look,[00:02:00]

Boy, I've got a old bunk house out in the back,[00:02:02]

" said "and if you promise me that you will stay in this bunk house,[00:02:05]

And watch my mill, and keep the fire from burning my mill down,[00:02:07]

" say "I live two blocks up the road,[00:02:10]

" say "and if you see the mill's on fire,[00:02:12]

Say you run up and tell me the mill's on fire,[00:02:14]

You got a home and meal as long as I've got it."[00:02:17]

"Ta-ta-ta-ta-thank you mister Charlie.[00:02:20]

" So the little old boy went to bunkin' that night.[00:02:21]

Sho' enough, late one Sunday morning,[00:02:25]

Mister Charlie's mill caught on fire.[00:02:28]

Which he'd forgot about what he had told the little boy.[00:02:29]

The little boy run up to him,[00:02:34]

He was cleaning out his front yard,[00:02:37]

Makin' it beautiful with them rose bushes,[00:02:41]

You know with them red rose bushes you know how to keep 'em red those rose bushes,[00:02:44]

And the little boy run up there,[00:02:50]

Tapped him on his back,[00:02:52]

And he raised up and said "Hey son, why here's you again."[00:02:54]

"Ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye" and he was pointing back toward the mill,[00:02:58]

Tryin' to tell him his rollin' mill was on fire.[00:03:01]

So mister Charlie said, "I ain't got time to fool with you.[00:03:04]

" So the little boy stuttered too bad for him to understand.[00:03:07]

So mister Charlie stooped over him again,[00:03:11]

He pat him on the back, said "ye-ye-ye-ye-your ro-ro-"[00:03:13]

He said "Wait a minute." He said,[00:03:16]

"if you can't talk you must sing", and he hollered:[00:03:18]

(sung)[00:03:21]

Whooooooa mister Charlie,[00:03:24]

Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down?[00:03:56]

Mister Charlie,[00:04:06]

Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down?[00:04:06]

Mister Charlie said if you ain't got no water boy,[00:04:18]

Just let that old mill burn on down[00:04:22]

Little boy was lonesome, he walked off and cried, he said,,,[00:04:33]

He walked back and he said it one more time[00:04:39]

Whooooooooa mister Charlie, I won't have no place to stay[00:04:49]

Mister Charlie, I won't have no place to stay[00:04:54]

Mister Charlie said Boy, you'll have a home with me,[00:04:59]

Just as long as there is a day[00:05:07]

Little boy sighed and he tell it one more time[00:05:15]

He hollered at him:[00:05:18]

Whooooooa mister Charlie,[00:05:20]

Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down?[00:05:21]

Mister Charlie,[00:05:23]

Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down?[00:05:25]

Mister Charlie said,[00:05:29]

"If you ain't got no water boy, just let that old mill burn on down"[00:05:30]
