Sequel(LP Version)

Sequel (LP Version) - Harry Chapin[00:00:00]

Written by:Harry Chapi/Howard/Ron Albert/Stephen Chapin/Mike Lewis[00:00:00]

So here she's actin' happy[00:00:00]

Inside her handsome home[00:00:04]

And me I'm flyin' in my taxi[00:00:08]

Takin' tips and gettin' stoned[00:00:11]

I got into town a little early[00:00:21]

Had eight hours to kill before the show[00:00:24]

First I thought about[00:00:28]

Heading up north of the bay[00:00:29]

Then I knew where I had to go[00:00:31]

I thought about taking a limousine[00:00:37]

Or at least a fancy car[00:00:40]

But I ended up taking a taxi[00:00:44]

'Cause that's how I got this far[00:00:48]

You see ten years ago it was the front seat[00:00:53]

Drivin' stoned and feelin' no pain[00:00:57]

Now here I am straight and sittin' in the back[00:01:01]

Hitting sixteen parkside lane[00:01:05]

The driveway was the same as I remembered[00:01:19]

And a butler came and answered the door[00:01:22]

He just shook his head when I asked for her[00:01:26]

And said she doesn't live here anymore[00:01:30]

But he offered to give me the address[00:01:37]

That they were forwarding her letters to[00:01:41]

I just took it and returned to the cabbie[00:01:45]

And said I got one more fare for you[00:01:47]

And so we rolled back into the city[00:01:56]

Up to a five store old brownstone[00:01:59]

I rang the bell that had her name on the mailbox[00:02:03]

The buzzer said somebody's home[00:02:07]

And the look on her face as she opened the door[00:02:20]

Was like an old joke told by a friend[00:02:24]

It'd taken ten more years but she'd found her smile[00:02:27]

And I watched the corners start to bend[00:02:31]

And she said how are you harry[00:02:37]

Haven't we played this scene before[00:02:41]

I said it's so good to see you sue[00:02:44]

Had to play it out just once more[00:02:48]

Play it out just once more[00:02:52]

She said I've heard you flying high on my radio[00:03:05]

I answered it's not all it seems[00:03:08]

That's when she laughed and she said it's better sometimes[00:03:12]

When we don't get to touch our dreams[00:03:16]

That's when I asked her where was that actress[00:03:27]

She said that was somebody else[00:03:31]

And then I asked her why she looked so happy now[00:03:34]

She said I finally like myself[00:03:38]

At last I like myself[00:03:44]

So we talked all through that afternoon[00:04:15]

Talking about where we'd been[00:04:19]

We talked of the tiny difference[00:04:22]

Between ending and starting to begin[00:04:25]

We talked because talking tells you things[00:04:29]

Like what you really are thinking about[00:04:33]

But sometimes you can't find what you're feeling[00:04:37]

Till all the words run out[00:04:40]

So I asked her to come to the concert[00:04:51]

She said no I work at night[00:04:55]

I said we've gotten too d**n good at leaving sue[00:04:58]

She said harry you're right[00:05:02]

Don't ask me if I made love to her[00:05:13]

Or which one of us started to cry[00:05:17]

Don't ask me why[00:05:21]

She wouldn't take the money that I left[00:05:22]

If I answered at all I'd lie[00:05:24]

So I thought about her as I sang that night[00:05:37]

And how the circle keeps rolling around[00:05:41]

How I act as I'm facing the footlights[00:05:44]

How she's flying with both feet on the ground[00:05:48]

I guess it's a sequel to our story[00:05:53]

From the journey between heaven and hell[00:05:57]

With half the time thinking of what might have been[00:06:02]

And half thinkin' just as well[00:06:05]

I guess only time will tell[00:06:11]
