Ragged Old Flag - Johnny Cash[00:00:00]
I walked through a county courthouse square[00:00:03]
On a park bench an old man was sitting there[00:00:05]
I said, your old courthouse is kinda run down[00:00:08]
He said, naw, it'll do for our little town[00:00:11]
I said, your old flagpole has leaned a little bit[00:00:14]
And that's a ragged old flag you got hanging on it[00:00:17]
He said, have a seat, and I sat down[00:00:20]
Is this the first time you've been to our little town?[00:00:22]
I said, I think it is[00:00:26]
He said, I don't like to brag[00:00:27]
But we're kinda proud of that ragged old flag[00:00:30]
You see, we got a little hole in that flag there when[00:00:37]
Washington took it across the Delaware[00:00:39]
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key[00:00:41]
Sat watching it writing say can you see[00:00:45]
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans[00:00:48]
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seams[00:00:51]
And it almost fell at the Alamo[00:00:54]
Beside the texas flag, but she waved on though[00:00:56]
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville[00:00:59]
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill[00:01:03]
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg[00:01:03]
And the south wind blew hard on that ragged old flag[00:01:08]
On Flanders field in World War one[00:01:15]
She got a big hole from a Bertha gun[00:01:18]
She turned blood red in World War Two[00:01:21]
She hung limp and low a time or two[00:01:23]
She was in Korea and Vietnam[00:01:27]
She went where she was sent by Uncle Sam[00:01:31]
She waved from our ships upon the Briny foam[00:01:35]
And now they've about quit waving her back here at home[00:01:38]
In her own good land here she's been abused[00:01:41]
She's been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused[00:01:44]
And the government for which she stands[00:01:47]
Is scandalized throughout the land[00:01:49]
And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin[00:01:51]
But she's in good shape for the shape she's in[00:01:54]
'Cause she's been through the fire before[00:01:58]
And I believe she can take a whole lot more[00:02:00]
So we raise her up every morning[00:02:02]
We take her down every night[00:02:05]
We don't let her touch the ground and we fold her up right[00:02:06]
On second thought, I do like to brag[00:02:09]
'Cause I'm mighty proud of that ragged old flag[00:02:13]
