The 1913 Massacre - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
Take a trip with me in 1913[00:00:05]
To Calumet Michigan [00:00:10]
In the copper country[00:00:12]
I'll take you to a place[00:00:15]
Called Italian Hall[00:00:17]
And the miners are having[00:00:20]
Their big Christmas Ball[00:00:24]
I'll take in a door[00:00:28]
And up a high stairs[00:00:30]
Singing and dancing is[00:00:33]
Heard everywhere[00:00:34]
I'll let you shake hands[00:00:37]
With the people you see[00:00:39]
And watch the kids dance[00:00:43]
Round that big Christmas tree[00:00:47]
You ask about work and you ask about pay[00:00:52]
They'll tell you they[00:00:56]
Make less a dollar a day[00:00:57]
Working the copper claims [00:01:02]
Risking their lives[00:01:03]
So it's fun to spend Christmas[00:01:06]
With children and wives[00:01:09]
There's talking and laughing[00:01:13]
And songs in the air[00:01:15]
And the spirit of Christmas[00:01:17]
Is there everywhere[00:01:19]
Before you know it [00:01:22]
You're friends with us all[00:01:24]
And you're dancing around[00:01:27]
And around in the hall[00:01:31]
Hey little girl sits down[00:01:35]
By the Christmas tree lights[00:01:36]
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet[00:01:38]
To hear all this fun you would not realize[00:01:41]
That the copper boss thug men[00:01:46]
Are milling outside[00:01:49]
The copper boss thugs stuck[00:01:52]
Their heads in the door[00:01:54]
One of them yelled and he screamed [00:01:56]
"There's a fire"[00:01:58]
A lady she hollered [00:02:01]
"There's no such a thing[00:02:02]
Keep on with your party [00:02:05]
There's no such a thing"[00:02:08]
A few people rushed and[00:02:11]
It's only a few[00:02:12]
"It's just the thugs and[00:02:14]
The scabs fooling you"[00:02:16]
A man grabbed his daughter[00:02:19]
And he carried her down[00:02:20]
But the thugs held the door[00:02:23]
And he could not get out[00:02:26]
And then others followed [00:02:30]
A hundred or more[00:02:31]
But most everybody remained[00:02:33]
On the floor[00:02:35]
The gun thugs they laughed[00:02:37]
At their murderous joke[00:02:38]
And the children were smothered[00:02:40]
On the stairs by the door[00:02:44]
Such a terrible sight[00:02:47]
I never did see[00:02:48]
We carried our children[00:02:51]
Back up to their tree[00:02:52]
The scabs outside still[00:02:55]
Laughed at their spree[00:02:57]
And the children that died[00:03:01]
There were seventy three[00:03:05]
The piano played a slow funeral tune[00:03:08]
And the town was lit up[00:03:13]
By a cold Christmas moon[00:03:14]
The parents they cried and[00:03:18]
The miners they moaned[00:03:19]
"See what your greed for money has done"[00:03:25]
