You Grew Up - Oddisee[00:00:00]
Let me take it back to my childhood[00:00:32]
When six flags was still called wildwood[00:00:34]
Where I had every race as a neighbor[00:00:36]
We were all working class trying to make it out of our hood[00:00:38]
My best friend back then was a white kid[00:00:40]
We was tight he liked the same things I did[00:00:42]
Despite us being different colors man[00:00:44]
We were tight as elmer's and we called each other brothers[00:00:46]
While I was trying to keep my nikes clean[00:00:47]
He was trying to scuff his chucks up[00:00:50]
He was grunge I was fresh we were young[00:00:51]
And we cuss along to rap trying to sneaking into punk clubs[00:00:53]
But things changed when his pops got laid off[00:00:55]
He blamed my father for the loss of his job[00:00:57]
He said immigrants robbed citizens jobs[00:01:00]
And I better never set foot again in his yard[00:01:01]
As we became adults in a cult called america[00:01:04]
He got himself a job as an officer of law[00:01:06]
My thoughts got blacker and his views got cracker[00:01:07]
There was no way backwards to the roots at heart[00:01:09]
Many years apart I recognized him in the news[00:01:12]
He shot a black man that was sitting in his car[00:01:13]
Near the same park where we used to shoot hoops[00:01:16]
And all I could blame was the cause[00:01:18]
You grew up[00:01:19]
No you didn't change[00:01:22]
You were made the same[00:01:24]
As those before you came[00:01:26]
You grew up[00:01:27]
All our growing pains[00:01:30]
Were given like our names[00:01:32]
You just bought the blame[00:01:34]
You grew up[00:01:36]
No you didn't change[00:01:38]
You were made the same[00:01:40]
As those before you came[00:01:42]
You grew up[00:01:44]
All our growing pains[00:01:46]
Were given like our names[00:01:48]
You just bought the blame[00:01:50]
You grew up[00:01:51]
You ever have a friend that became a fanatic[00:01:52]
Most of you all haven't[00:01:54]
But if you ever did[00:01:55]
You'd understand the one thing they all have in common[00:01:56]
That somebody took advantage of their damage as a kid[00:01:57]
I knew a guy who's folks were professors[00:01:59]
Proof in the flesh that allah was a blesser[00:02:01]
Grew up in a mid western town[00:02:03]
Where there weren't many brown people he could seek reflection[00:02:05]
Got picked on in school during lectures[00:02:07]
Graduated hating everybody in his class[00:02:09]
Picked on because he prayed five to the east[00:02:11]
And he didn't eat meat that allah said was bad[00:02:13]
One day a man approached him in a mosque[00:02:16]
Changed his life when he asked him a question[00:02:17]
Do you ever feel your life was a loss[00:02:19]
And what if I could teach you that life is a weapon[00:02:21]
Attracted strong to the feeling of acceptance[00:02:24]
He was soon gone with delusions of a cause[00:02:25]
People of the present had faces of the past[00:02:27]
Make it easier to blast them if he feel they did him wrong[00:02:29]
You can raise a child in a house full love[00:02:32]
But can't keep them safe in a world full of hate[00:02:33]
So he blew up[00:02:36]
The only mistake that could hold all the blame[00:02:37]
You grew up[00:02:39]
No you didn't change[00:02:42]
You were made the same[00:02:44]
As those before you came[00:02:46]
You grew up[00:02:48]
All our growing pains[00:02:50]
Were given like our names[00:02:52]
You just bought the blame[00:02:54]
You grew up[00:02:55]
No you didn't change[00:02:58]
You were made the same[00:03:00]
As those before you came[00:03:02]
You grew up[00:03:04]
All our growing pains[00:03:06]
Were given like our names[00:03:08]
You just bought the blame[00:03:10]
You grew up[00:03:11]
My heart's a jug and when I was born it was filled with love[00:03:12]
It ranneth over life ran me over till I spilled the blood[00:03:16]
I poured the cups and I left it up you to say enough[00:03:20]
Never ending never quenching I sealed it up[00:03:24]
Tried to change my reality but settled for real enough[00:03:28]
Life is better when you're thinking lesser go on give it up[00:03:32]
When I was younger I was so determined[00:03:35]
I would change it all couldn't fly but wasn't chained to fall[00:03:36]
So where is it I put the blame and cause[00:03:40]
Well I grew up[00:03:42]
