What Is Father - Hank Snow[00:00:00]
Written by:Hank Snow[00:00:01]
Almost any evening about six[00:00:09]
An adult male can be seen taking off his shoes[00:00:10]
Putting on house slippers picking up the evening paper[00:00:14]
And reclining deep in the softest chair[00:00:17]
In the living room of any well regulated home[00:00:19]
No sooner is he seated comfortably[00:00:23]
When small creatures call children[00:00:25]
Climb up on top of him muss his hair tumble in his lap[00:00:28]
Kiss him and hug him[00:00:32]
And run for mother when he lets out a great big yell[00:00:33]
He is not a monster although he is sometimes accused of it[00:00:37]
When he loses his temper[00:00:40]
He is not exactly a stranger in the house[00:00:42]
Although he mostly sleeps and eats there[00:00:45]
He is not a boarder although he thinks sometimes[00:00:48]
That it would be cheaper for him[00:00:50]
No he is none of these things he is a father[00:00:52]
Father's come in assorted shapes sizes and ages[00:00:57]
But all have one common creed[00:01:00]
To always provide to the best of his ability[00:01:03]
All the comforts of good living to his wife and family[00:01:06]
To always have a little extra change in his pockets for the children[00:01:10]
Bills of large denomonations for his wife and family expenses[00:01:14]
And a secret hidden compartment in his wallet[00:01:18]
For bills of a smaller denomonations[00:01:20]
For his own pleasures which are few[00:01:22]
Fathers are a necessary item in each home[00:01:26]
They are handy for putting up storm windows painting screens[00:01:29]
Mowing the lawn nailing a shelf lifting heavy objects[00:01:33]
Moving the furniture wiping the dishes cleaning the basement[00:01:38]
And they are perfect as a soft touch[00:01:42]
When the kids need spending money[00:01:44]
Children adore them house to house salesmen hate them[00:01:47]
Wives tolerate them and heaven[00:01:50]
And the insurance companies protect them[00:01:52]
At home a father is usually quiet unassuming and casual[00:01:55]
He answers to names like daddy dad pop popsey the old man that stinker[00:01:59]
And that loveable character or the mister of the house[00:02:06]
He answers most questions with inaudible mumbles daydreaming glances[00:02:11]
Or house shaking bellows depending on the situation[00:02:15]
Get him into his best blue suit[00:02:19]
And well starched collar and he complains bitterly[00:02:21]
But once at the party he becomes the speaker of the evening[00:02:24]
He tells jokes he would never tolerate at home[00:02:28]
And he dances with all the girls[00:02:31]
Wears the lampshade as a hula costume[00:02:33]
And protests loudly when the last hour's finished[00:02:35]
And mother bustles him homeward[00:02:38]
Fathers are a paradox they will fight man or beast to protect the family[00:02:41]
Yet an upset stomach or a minor pain is reason[00:02:45]
Enough to cause loud moaning and groaning[00:02:48]
And checking to see if the last will and testement is in order[00:02:50]
He walks ten miles on the golfcourse[00:02:55]
But takes the car to mail a letter at the corner[00:02:57]
He eats like a horse but uses sacchrine in his coffee[00:03:00]
Because he is on a diet[00:03:03]
He hollers bloody murder when the bills come due[00:03:05]
But always manages to come up with a nice gift at the appropriate time[00:03:08]
He is a devil an angel a saint a gallant gentleman an uncouth creature[00:03:12]
A wise business man and a sucker for a sob story[00:03:19]
Fathers are people who snore the loudest use the bathroom the longest[00:03:24]
Can't find shirts underwear and socks the ofteness[00:03:29]
And holler the loudest when mother[00:03:33]
And the kids are not dressed and ready to go when he is[00:03:34]
Fathers should never be bothered[00:03:39]
When they are reading the paper when monthly bills arrive[00:03:40]
The 15 th of march and on sunday mornings[00:03:43]
Fathers like books golf a good smoke[00:03:47]
Open necked shirts house slippers tweed suits[00:03:50]
A soft bed cards hammocks after shave lotions sports[00:03:54]
Sleeping late lodge nights and one woman[00:03:59]
They are not so much for company neck ties[00:04:03]
Shaving perfumes after dinner speakers[00:04:06]
Crowds lawnmowers relatives mother's new hat diets cuff links collar buttons[00:04:09]
Empty refrigerators tuxedos garters and dentisits[00:04:17]
They remember business appointments luncheons sporting data and taxes[00:04:23]
But forget birthdays anniversaries grocery lists and the ring in the bathtub[00:04:28]
Yes father's are strange customers[00:04:34]
They holler and beller and complain[00:04:37]
They never seem to do things the right way[00:04:39]
They bundle the kids off to sunday school then sleep through church[00:04:43]
They are outwardly tough and inwardly sentimental[00:04:47]
And they are the little boys of yesterday grown up[00:04:51]
And yet when this big rough tough rugged self sufficient man talks with his Lord[00:04:54]
When and where no other human can see him in his humility[00:05:01]
He will invariable say something like this[00:05:05]
Dear beloved father thanks for seeing my family safely[00:05:10]
Through another day in these uncertain times[00:05:14]
Thanks for the health the food and the goodness[00:05:18]
You have bestowed upon my loved ones[00:05:21]
Thanks for helpin' to make of me the man my kids think I am[00:05:24]
Thanks for forgiving my transgressions and shortcomings[00:05:29]
And for helping me to walk closer in thy way[00:05:32]
Thanks again for my wonderful home and family[00:05:36]
And above all thanks for the woman you have blessed me with[00:05:39]
The mother of my children my wonderful understanding wife[00:05:42]
Please watch over them while I am away[00:05:47]
And bring peace to all families like ours everywhere[00:05:49]
I ask this in your name[00:05:54]
Thanks father[00:05:57]
Amen[00:05:58]
