1913 Massacre (Live) - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
Written by:Trad/ArrGuthrie[00:00:01]
Take a trip with me in 1913[00:00:04]
To Calumet Michigan in the copper country[00:00:10]
I will take you to a place called Italian hall[00:00:17]
Where the straiker are having their big Christmas ball[00:00:25]
I will take you in a door and up a high stairs[00:00:35]
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere[00:00:41]
I let you shake hands with the people you see[00:00:48]
And watch the kids dance around the big Christmas tree[00:00:54]
You ask about work and you ask about pay[00:01:02]
They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day[00:01:09]
Working the copper wholes risking their lives[00:01:15]
So it's fun to spend Christmas with children and wives[00:01:20]
There's talking and laughing and songs in the air[00:01:29]
And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere[00:01:34]
Before you know it you're friends with us all[00:01:40]
You're dancing around and around in the hall[00:01:45]
Well a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights[00:01:53]
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet[00:01:59]
To hear all this fun you would not realize[00:02:04]
That the copper boss thug men are milling outside[00:02:10]
Well the copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door[00:02:17]
One of them yelled and he screamed there's a fire[00:02:24]
A lady she hollered there's no such a thing[00:02:30]
Keep on with your party there's no such thing[00:02:35]
All of few people rushed it was only a few[00:02:42]
It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you[00:02:47]
A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down[00:02:52]
But the thugs held the door and he could not get out[00:02:58]
And then others followed a hundred or more[00:03:06]
But most everybody remained on the floor[00:03:10]
The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke[00:03:17]
While the children were smothered on the stairs by the door[00:03:22]
Such a terrible sight I never did see[00:03:29]
We carried our children back up to their tree[00:03:34]
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree[00:03:40]
And the children that died there were seventy three[00:03:46]
The piano played a slow funeral tune[00:03:54]
The town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon[00:03:59]
The parents they cried and the miners they moaned[00:04:06]
See what your greed for money has done[00:04:14]
