Took them out, but this one boy[00:00:41]

Only had a deck of cards, and so he spread[00:00:42]

The Sergeant saw the cards and said,[00:00:46]

"Soldier, put away those cards."[00:00:48]

After the services were over the soldier[00:00:52]

Was taken prisoner and brought[00:00:53]

Before the Provost Marshall.[00:00:55]

The Marshall said, "Sargent,[00:00:55]

Why have you brought this man here?"[00:00:59]

"For playing cards in church, sir."[00:01:01]

"And what have you to say for yourself, son?"[00:01:04]

"Much, sir." replied the soldier.[00:01:06]

'The Marshall said, "I hope so, for if not ,[00:01:09]

I shall punish you more than[00:01:13]

Any man was ever punished."[00:01:14]

The soldier said, "Sir ,[00:01:17]

I have been on a march for about six days,[00:01:20]

And I had neither Bible nor Prayer Book,[00:01:23]

But I hope to satisfy you,[00:01:26]

With that the boy started his story.[00:01:32]

"You see, Sir, when I look at the Ace it[00:01:44]

Reminds me that there is but one God.[00:01:47]

The deuce reminds me that the Bible is[00:01:52]

Divided into two parts; the Old and New Testaments.[00:01:54]

And when I see the trey I think of[00:01:58]

The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.[00:02:00]

When I see the four I think of the[00:02:04]

Four evangelist who preached the Gospel.[00:02:06]

There was Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.[00:02:09]

And when I see the five it reminds me[00:02:13]

Of the five wise virgins who trimmed their lamps.[00:02:15]

Ten of 'em; five who were wise and were saved;[00:02:19]

Five were foolish and were shut out.[00:02:23]

And when I see the six it[00:02:27]

Reminds me that in six days[00:02:29]

God made this great heaven and earth.[00:02:30]

And when[00:02:34]

I see the seven it reminds me that[00:02:34]

On the seventh day God rested from His[00:02:37]

Great work. When I see the eight I think[00:02:39]

Of the eight righteous persons God saved[00:02:42]

When he destroyed this earth. There was Noah,[00:02:45]

His wife,their three sons, and their wives.[00:02:48]

And when I see the nine I think of the[00:02:53]

Lepers our Savior cleansed , and nine of the ten[00:02:55]

Didn't even thank Him. When I see the ten I think[00:02:58]

Of the Ten Commandments God handed down to[00:03:03]

Moses on a tablet of stone. When I see the King[00:03:08]

It reminds me that there is but one King of Heaven,[00:03:14]

God Almighty. And when I see the queen I think[00:03:18]

Of the Blessed Virgin Mary who is Queen of Heaven.[00:03:22]

And the jacks, or knaves, it's the devil. And when[00:03:27]

I count the number of spots on a deck of cards[00:03:33]

I find three hundred sixty-five[00:03:36]

The number of days in a year.[00:03:37]

Fifty-two cards, the number of weeks in a year.[00:03:40]

Thirteen tricks, the number of weeks in a quarter.[00:03:47]

Four suits, the number of weeks in a month.[00:03:49]

Twelve picture cards, the number of months in a year.[00:03:53]

So you see, Sir, my pack of cards[00:03:59]

Serve me as a Bible, almanac, and prayer book."[00:04:02]
