Utah Carrol - Marty Robbins[00:00:00]
And now my friends you've asked me[00:00:05]
What makes me sad and still[00:00:08]
And why my brow is darkened[00:00:11]
Like the clouds upon the hill[00:00:14]
Run in your ponies closer[00:00:17]
And I'll tell to you my tale[00:00:19]
Of Utah Carol my partner[00:00:22]
And his last ride on the trail[00:00:25]
We rode the range together[00:00:28]
And rode it side by side[00:00:31]
I loved him like a brother [00:00:34]
And I wept when Utah died[00:00:36]
We were rounding up one morning[00:00:39]
When work was almost done[00:00:42]
When on his side the cattle[00:00:45]
Started on a frightened run[00:00:48]
Underneath the saddle[00:00:51]
That the boss's daughter rode[00:00:53]
Utah that very morning[00:00:56]
Had placed a bright red robe[00:00:59]
So the saddle might ride[00:01:02]
Easy for Lenore his little friend[00:01:04]
And it was this red blanket[00:01:07]
That brought him to his end[00:01:10]
The blanket was now dragging[00:01:13]
Behind her on the ground[00:01:16]
The frightened cattle saw it[00:01:19]
And charged it with a bound[00:01:22]
Lenore then saw her danger[00:01:25]
And turned her pony's face[00:01:27]
And leaning in the saddle tied[00:01:30]
The blanket to its place[00:01:33]
But in leaning lost her balance [00:01:36]
Fell in front of that wild tide[00:01:38]
"Lay still Lenore I'm coming"[00:01:41]
Were the words that Utah cried[00:01:44]
His faithful pony saw her[00:01:47]
And reached her with a bound[00:01:50]
I thought he'd been successful [00:01:53]
And raised her from the ground[00:01:56]
But the weight upon the saddle[00:01:58]
Had not been felt before[00:02:01]
His backcinch snapped like thunder[00:02:04]
And he fell by Lenore[00:02:07]
Picking up the blanket[00:02:10]
He swung it over his head[00:02:13]
And started cross the prairie [00:02:15]
"Lay still Lenore" he said[00:02:18]
When he got the stampede turned[00:02:21]
And saved Lenore his friend[00:02:24]
He turned to face the cattle[00:02:27]
And meet his fatal end[00:02:29]
His six gun flashed like lightning [00:02:32]
The report rang loud and clear[00:02:35]
As the cattle rushed and killed him[00:02:38]
He dropped the leading steer[00:02:41]
On his funeral morning[00:02:44]
I heard the preacher say[00:02:46]
I hope we'll all meet Utah[00:02:49]
At the roundup far away[00:02:52]
Then they wrapped him in a blanket[00:02:55]
That saved his little friend[00:02:58]
And it was this red blanket[00:03:00]
That brought him to his end[00:03:03]
