The Great Dust Storm - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
On the 14th day of April of 1935 [00:00:03]
There struck the worst of[00:00:10]
Dust storms that ever filled the sky [00:00:12]
You could see that dust storm comin' [00:00:17]
The cloud looked deathlike black [00:00:20]
And through our mighty nation [00:00:23]
It left a dreadful track [00:00:27]
From Oklahoma City to the Arizona line [00:00:31]
Dakota and Nebraska to the lazy Rio Grande [00:00:37]
It fell across our city like a[00:00:44]
Curtain of black rolled down [00:00:48]
We thought it was our judgement [00:00:51]
We thought it was our doom [00:00:54]
The radio reported we listened with alarm [00:00:57]
The wild and windy actions of[00:01:04]
This great mysterious storm;[00:01:08]
From Albuquerque and Clovis [00:01:11]
And all New Mexico [00:01:14]
They said it was the blackest that ever they had saw [00:01:18]
From old Dodge City Kansas [00:01:24]
The dust had rung their knell [00:01:28]
And a few more comrades[00:01:31]
Sleeping on top of old Boot Hill [00:01:34]
From Denver Colorado [00:01:38]
They said it blew so strong [00:01:41]
They thought that they could hold out [00:01:45]
But they didn't know how long [00:01:48]
Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks [00:01:52]
And the children they was cryin'[00:01:58]
As it whistled through the cracks [00:02:02]
And the family it was crowded into their little room [00:02:05]
They thought the world had ended [00:02:12]
And they thought it was their doom [00:02:15]
The storm took place at sundown [00:02:19]
It lasted through the night [00:02:22]
When we looked out next morning [00:02:25]
We saw a terrible sight [00:02:29]
We saw outside our window[00:02:32]
Where wheat fields they had grown[00:02:36]
Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown [00:02:40]
It covered up our fences [00:02:47]
It covered up our barns [00:02:50]
It covered up our tractors in this wild and dusty storm [00:02:53]
We loaded our jalopies and piled our families in [00:03:00]
We rattled down that highway to never come back again[00:03:07]
