You Never Even Called Me By My Name - David Alan Coe[00:00:00]
It was all that I could do to keep from cryin'[00:00:01]
Sometimes it seems so useless to remain[00:00:11]
You don't have to call me darlin' darlin'[00:00:20]
You never even call me by my name [00:00:30]
You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings[00:00:40]
And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride [00:00:48]
You don't have to call me Merle Haggard anymore [00:00:57]
Even though your on my fightin' side [00:01:07]
And I'll hang around as long as you will let me[00:01:15]
And I never minded standin' in the rain [00:01:24]
You don't have to call me darlin' darlin'[00:01:34]
You never even call me by my name [00:01:43]
I've heard my name a few times in your phone book[00:01:52]
I've seen it on signs where I've laid[00:02:01]
But the only time I know [00:02:10]
I'll hear David Allan Coe[00:02:15]
Is when Jesus has his final judgement day [00:02:19]
So I'll hang around as long as you will let me[00:02:28]
And I never minded standin' in the rain No [00:02:37]
You don't have to call me darlin' darlin'[00:02:47]
You never even call me by my name [00:02:55]
Well a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song[00:03:05]
And he told me it was the perfect country and western song[00:03:08]
I wrote him back a letter and told him it was NOT the perfect[00:03:13]
Country and western song because he hadn't said anything about[00:03:15]
Momma or trains or trucks or prison or gettin' drunk [00:03:19]
Well he sat down and wrote another verse to the song and he sent[00:03:31]
It to me and after reading it [00:03:34]
I realized that my friend had written[00:03:36]
The perfect country and western song [00:03:39]
And I felt obliged to include it[00:03:41]
On this album The last verse goes like this here:[00:03:43]
Well I was drunk the day my Mom got outta prison [00:03:49]
And I went to pick her up in the rain [00:03:58]
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck[00:04:07]
She got runned over by a damned old train [00:04:17]
So I'll hang around as long as you will let me[00:04:25]
And I never minded standin' in the rain No [00:04:34]
You don't have to call me darlin' darlin'[00:04:43]
You never even call me I wonder why you don't call me[00:04:52]
Why don't you ever call me by my name[00:05:01]
