Sundown - Marty Robbins[00:00:00]
Written by:M. Robbins[00:00:01]
Bill Thaxton was an ex-ranger[00:00:08]
One of the bravest by far[00:00:11]
It's said that old Bill was the fastest man ever[00:00:15]
To pin on a ranger's star[00:00:19]
Stories about him were legends[00:00:23]
Bill was the best of the bold[00:00:27]
Bad men all feared him way back in his day[00:00:31]
But he was now growing old[00:00:35]
Into Bill's town rode an outlaw[00:00:41]
He wore his gun low and tied down[00:00:44]
He reined in his horse and announced to the crowd[00:00:48]
If you speak to me call me sundown[00:00:52]
His clothes were all dark and fancy[00:00:56]
And topped by a black leather vest[00:01:00]
Somebody asked how he came by his name[00:01:04]
And if he was one of the best[00:01:08]
The eyes of the tall stranger narrowed[00:01:14]
He grinned like the devil possessed[00:01:18]
I never fight till the sun's going down[00:01:22]
And my back is facing the west[00:01:25]
Said he wouldn't be with us tomorrow[00:01:35]
He only rode in for one thing[00:01:39]
He only stopped by to make Bill Thaxton die[00:01:43]
So he could add to his fame[00:01:47]
Go give Bill Thaxton a message[00:01:51]
And tell him a killer's in town[00:01:55]
Tell him we'll meet at the end of the street[00:01:59]
Just as the sun's going down[00:02:03]
Somebody said it had been years[00:02:09]
Since old Bill had toted a gun[00:02:12]
Sundown replied that it wasn't his hide[00:02:17]
Killing old Bill would be fun[00:02:21]
The old ranger sent back his answer[00:02:25]
Tell him that I'm on my way[00:02:28]
I've never ran and I'll meet this young man[00:02:32]
At any time of the day[00:02:36]
Bill got there just about sunset[00:02:42]
It still hung like fire in the sky[00:02:46]
In just a few moments out there in the street[00:02:50]
Old Bill or the outlaw would die[00:02:54]
Slowly Bill slid from the saddle[00:03:04]
And started to make his advance[00:03:07]
The sun hit the old ranger square in the eyes[00:03:11]
The shadows had started to dance[00:03:15]
Bill started talking to sundown[00:03:19]
Judging his distance that way[00:03:24]
Their stride was the same and at just thirty feet[00:03:27]
Both of the men made their play[00:03:31]
Bill's gun slipped leather like lightning[00:03:37]
His forty four spoke with a whine[00:03:41]
The sun didn't bother Bill Thaxton at all[00:03:45]
Because the old ranger was blind[00:03:49]
Six shots delivered their message[00:03:53]
The ranger had emptied his gun[00:03:57]
Old Bill gave a sigh when there was no reply[00:04:00]
He knew that once more he had won[00:04:05]
The old ranger lowered his six gun[00:04:11]
He just stood there starting ahead[00:04:14]
Watching you'd think that old Bill didn't know[00:04:18]
In front of him sundown lay dead[00:04:22]
Bill has been gone for a long time[00:04:32]
But old timers still can recall[00:04:36]
The day the old ranger stood up to the test[00:04:40]
And proved he was best of them all[00:04:44]
