Before I Knocked - Richard Burton[00:00:00]
Before I knocked and flesh let enter [00:00:00]
With liquid hands tapped on the womb [00:00:03]
I who was as shapeless as the water[00:00:06]
That shaped the Jordan near my home[00:00:08]
Was brother to Mnetha's daughter[00:00:11]
And sister to the fathering worm [00:00:13]
I who was deaf to spring and summer [00:00:17]
Who knew not sun nor moon by name [00:00:19]
Felt thud beneath my flesh's armour [00:00:22]
As yet was in a molten form[00:00:24]
The leaden stars the rainy hammer[00:00:27]
Swung by my father from his dome [00:00:29]
I knew the message of the winter [00:00:33]
The darted hail the childish snow [00:00:35]
And the wind was my sister suitor;[00:00:37]
Wind in me leaped the hellborn dew;[00:00:40]
My veins flowed with the Eastern weather;[00:00:42]
Ungotten I knew night and day [00:00:45]
As yet ungotten I did suffer;[00:00:50]
The rack of dreams my lily bones[00:00:53]
Did twist into a living cipher [00:00:56]
And flesh was snipped to cross the lines[00:00:58]
Of gallow crosses on the liver[00:01:00]
And brambles in the wringing brains [00:01:03]
My throat knew thirst before the structure[00:01:07]
Of skin and vein around the well[00:01:09]
Where words and water make a mixture[00:01:12]
Unfailing till the blood runs foul;[00:01:14]
My heart knew love my belly hunger;[00:01:17]
I smelt the maggot in my stool [00:01:21]
And time cast forth my mortal creature[00:01:25]
To drift or drown upon the seas[00:01:28]
Acquainted with the salt adventure[00:01:31]
Of tides that never touch the shores [00:01:33]
I who was rich was made the richer[00:01:36]
By sipping at the vine of days [00:01:39]
I born of flesh and ghost was neither[00:01:43]
A ghost nor man but mortal ghost [00:01:45]
And I was struck down by death's feather [00:01:48]
I was a mortal to the last[00:01:51]
Long breath that carried to my father[00:01:53]
The message of his dying christ [00:01:56]
You who bow down at cross and altar [00:02:00]
Remember me and pity Him[00:02:04]
Who took my flesh and bone for armour[00:02:08]
And doublecrossed my mother's womb [00:02:12]
