Leon McDuff

Leon McDuff - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band[00:00:00]

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury[00:00:00]

I come before you to plead for the life of Leon McDuff[00:00:03]

Ladies and gentlemen on the jury[00:00:08]

I asking you to be the judge of when enough is enough[00:00:11]

Now Leon McDuff has worked on his daddy's farm[00:00:19]

Everyday since the day that he was born[00:00:23]

Plowing in the fields and hoeing in the garden[00:00:26]

And helping pick the cotton and the corn[00:00:30]

Then came the time of the Mississippi floods[00:00:34]

And all of his work went down the drain[00:00:37]

The land was parched by the sun and blown[00:00:40]

By the wind and finally washed away by the rain[00:00:43]

So he went to his friends to get some help from them[00:00:47]

But their crops and their money was all gone[00:00:51]

So he went to the bank to mortgage his home[00:00:54]

But the bank wouldn't give Leon a loan[00:00:58]

He could not decide how his family would survive[00:01:02]

With no crops and no money to buy food[00:01:05]

And as he struggled with his hands to rework his land[00:01:09]

The notice came that said his land tax was due[00:01:12]

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury[00:01:16]

I come before you to plead for the life of Leon McDuff[00:01:19]

Now in an air-conditioned office on the other side of town[00:01:28]

Sat a government official with a frown[00:01:31]

'Cause he'd been trying for so long to find land to build[00:01:35]

A summer home but cheap river land could not be found[00:01:38]

Then in the middle of his gloom his boss walked[00:01:42]

In the room and said I've got some real good news[00:01:45]

For the house you've planned[00:01:47]

There's a farmer who's so poor and who's luck has run[00:01:49]

So sour that he can not pay the taxes on his land[00:01:52]

So just you wait a week or two 'til the money's over due[00:01:56]

Then go to the cashier down the hall[00:02:00]

With his deed in your hand pay the taxes on the land[00:02:04]

Have the sheriff give Leon McDuff a call[00:02:07]

Have him tell Leon to move by the last day of July[00:02:11]

Because the taxes on his land are overdue[00:02:15]

Tell him he has to move away[00:02:18]

'Cause the taxes were not paid[00:02:20]

Then all his river land belongs to you[00:02:22]

Now in that air-conditioned office in about a week[00:02:29]

Or two came the sheriff saying I've got some bad news[00:02:31]

That Leon McDuff says he's had some bad luck[00:02:36]

And he'll try to get the money but he ain't agonna' move[00:02:39]

That official he jumped up and grabbed[00:02:43]

The sheriff by the arm he said[00:02:46]

We're going down to take that land today[00:02:47]

So he and the sheriff drove down to Leon's farm[00:02:51]

To tell the McDuffs to move away[00:02:55]

There stood Leon on his land with a shotgun in his hand [00:02:58]

His eyes narrowed 'neath the brim of his hat[00:03:01]

He said "I've worked hard on this land as a boy[00:03:05]

And as a man I ain't gonna lose it[00:03:08]

To no god damned bureaucrat "[00:03:10]

Well that bureaucrat got mad and grabbed[00:03:12]

The gun in Leon's hand and in the struggle[00:03:15]

An explosion cracked the air[00:03:17]

And when the smoke and dust had cleared[00:03:20]

And the ringing left their ears the sheriff lay[00:03:22]

A dying on the ground[00:03:25]

The sheriff lay a dying on the ground[00:03:27]

Now on this table I will lay this gun "Exhibit A"[00:03:45]

With two sets of fingerprints as you can see[00:03:49]

But other hands were here unperceived by eye[00:03:53]

Or ear that helped trigger off this awful tragedy[00:03:56]

Now to me its still unclear just[00:04:00]

What really caused the problem here[00:04:02]

There's much too much we've got to know[00:04:04]

Before we know enough[00:04:06]

So we can't find out today where all the guilt[00:04:07]

Should lay but it shouldn't be on Leon McDuff[00:04:10]

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury[00:04:15]

I come before you to plead for the life of Leon McDuff[00:04:18]

Ladies and gentlemen on the jury[00:04:23]

I asking you to be the judge of when enough is enough[00:04:27]

It's just by enough[00:04:36]
