Soldier (Manchester Square Demo) - Angelic Upstarts[00:00:00]
Written by:Andrews[00:00:01]
In a station in the city a British soldier stood[00:00:12]
Talking to the people there if the people would[00:00:18]
Some just stared in hatred and others turned in pain[00:00:23]
And the lonely British soldier wished he was back home again[00:00:28]
Come join the British army said the posters in his town[00:00:33]
See the world and have your come serve before the crown[00:00:38]
The jobs were hard to come by and could not face the dole[00:00:43]
So he took his country's shilling and enlisted on the roll[00:00:48]
But there was no fear of fighting the empire long was lost[00:00:53]
Just ten years in the army getting paid for being bossed[00:00:58]
Then leave a man experienced a man who's made the grade[00:01:03]
A medal and a pension some memories and a trade[00:01:08]
Then came the call to Ireland as the call had came before[00:01:13]
Another bloody chapter in an endless civil war[00:01:18]
The priests they stood on both[00:01:23]
Sides the priests they stood behind[00:01:25]
Another fight in Jesus name the blind against the blind[00:01:28]
The soldier stood between them between the whistling stones[00:01:33]
And then the broken bottles that led to broken bones[00:01:38]
The petrol bombs that burnt[00:01:43]
His hands the nails that pierced his skin[00:01:45]
And now wished that he'd stayed at home[00:01:48]
Surrounded by his kin[00:01:51]
The station filled with people the soldier soon was bored[00:01:53]
But better in the station than where the people warred[00:01:58]
The room filled up with mothers[00:02:03]
With daughters and with sons[00:02:06]
Who stared with itchy fingers at the soldier and his gun[00:02:08]
A yell of fear a screech of brakes the shattering of glass[00:02:13]
The window of the station broke to let the package pass[00:02:18]
A scream came from the mothers as they ran towards the door[00:02:23]
Dragging children crying from the bomb upon the floor[00:02:29]
The soldier stood and could not move his gun he could not use[00:02:33]
He knew the bomb had seconds and not minutes on the fuse[00:02:38]
He could not run to pick it up and throw it in the street[00:02:43]
There were far too many people there too many running feet[00:02:48]
Take cover yelled the soldier take cover for your lives[00:02:53]
And the Irishmen threw down their[00:02:58]
Young and stood before their wives[00:03:00]
They turned towards the soldier their eyes alive with fear[00:03:03]
For god's sake save children they'll end their short lives here[00:03:08]
The soldier moved towards the bomb his stomach like a stone[00:03:13]
Why was this his battle god why was he alone[00:03:18]
He lay down on the package and he murmured one farewell[00:03:23]
To those at home in England to those he loved so well[00:03:29]
He saw the sights of summer felt the wind upon his brow[00:03:34]
The young girls in the city parks how precious were they now[00:03:39]
The soaring of the swallow the beauty of the swan[00:03:44]
The music of the turning world so soon would it be gone[00:03:49]
A muffled soft explosion and the room began to quake[00:03:54]
The soldier blown across the floor his blood a crimson lake[00:03:59]
They never heard him cry or shout never heard him moan[00:04:04]
And they turned their children's faces from[00:04:09]
The blood and from the bones[00:04:11]
The crowd outside soon gathered and the ambulances came[00:04:14]
To carry off the body of a pawn lost to the game[00:04:19]
And the crowd they clapped and cheered[00:04:24]
And they sang their rebel songs[00:04:26]
One soldier less to interfere where he did not belong[00:04:29]
But will the children growing up learn at their mothers knees[00:04:34]
The story of that soldier who bought their liberty[00:04:39]
Who used his youthful body as a means towards the end[00:04:44]
Who gave his life to those who called him murderer not friend[00:04:49]
