Old Doc Brown - Johnny Cash[00:00:05]
He was just an old country doctor[00:01:20]
In a little country town[00:01:21]
Fame and fortune had passed him by[00:01:24]
Though we never saw him frown[00:01:26]
As day by day in his kindly way[00:01:29]
He'd serve us one and all[00:01:31]
Many a patient forgot to pay[00:01:34]
Although Doc's fees were small[00:01:36]
Though he needed his dimes and there were[00:01:39]
Times that he'd receive a fee[00:01:41]
He'd pass it onto some poor soul[00:01:44]
That needed it worse than he[00:01:46]
He had to sell his furniture[00:01:49]
Couldn't pay his office rent[00:01:50]
So to a dusty room over a livery stable[00:01:53]
Doc Brown and his satchel went[00:01:56]
And on the hitchin' post at the kerb below[00:01:59]
To advertise his wares[00:02:02]
He nailed a little sign that read[00:02:04]
"Doc Brown has moved upstairs"[00:02:07]
And one day he didn't answer[00:02:10]
When they knocked upon his door[00:02:11]
Old Doc Brown was layin' down[00:02:14]
But his soul was no more[00:02:17]
They found him there in that old black suit[00:02:19]
On his face was a smile of content[00:02:22]
But all the money they could find on him[00:02:25]
Was a quarter and a copper cent[00:02:27]
So they opened up his ledger[00:02:30]
And what they saw gave their hearts a pull[00:02:32]
Beside each debtor's name old Doc[00:02:35]
Had write these words "Paid in full"[00:02:38]
Old Doc should had[00:02:43]
A funeral fine enough for a king[00:02:44]
It's a ghastly joke our town was broke[00:02:47]
And no one could give a thing[00:02:50]
'Cept Jones an undertaker[00:02:52]
He did mighty well[00:02:54]
Donated an old iron casket[00:02:55]
He had never been able to sell[00:02:57]
And the funeral procession[00:02:59]
It wasn't much for grace and pomp and the style[00:03:01]
But those wagon loads of mourners[00:03:05]
They stretched out for more than a mile[00:03:08]
We wanted to give him a monument[00:03:11]
We kinda figured we owed him one[00:03:12]
'Cause he made our town a better place[00:03:15]
For all the good he'd done[00:03:17]
We pulled up that old hitchin' post[00:03:20]
Where Doc had nailed a sign[00:03:22]
We'd painted it white and to all of us[00:03:25]
It certainly did look fine[00:03:28]
Now the rains and the snows[00:03:31]
Have washed away our white trimmin's of paint[00:03:33]
There ain't nothin' left but Doc's own sign[00:03:36]
And that's gettin' pretty faint[00:03:39]
But you can still see that old hitchin' post[00:03:42]
As if in answer to our prayers[00:03:45]
Mutually tellin' the whole wide world[00:03:48]
Doc Brown has moved upstairs[00:03:51]
