The Story Of Bo Diddley - The Animals[00:00:01]
Now let's hear the story of Bo Diddley[00:00:10]
And the rock 'n' roll scene in general[00:00:13]
Bo Diddley was born Ellis McDaniels[00:00:17]
In a place called McCoom[00:00:21]
Mississipi about 1926[00:00:23]
He moved to Chicago about 1938[00:00:27]
Where his name was eventually changed[00:00:31]
To Bo Diddley[00:00:35]
He practiced the guitar everyday and sometimes into the night[00:00:37]
Till his papa's hair began to turn white[00:00:45]
His pa said "Son listen hear I know[00:00:49]
You can stay but that guitar has just gotta go"[00:00:53]
So he pulled his hat down over his eyes[00:00:58]
Headed out for them western skies[00:01:02]
I think Bob Dylan said that[00:01:04]
He hit New York City[00:01:06]
He began to play at the Apollo in Harlem[00:01:10]
Good scene there everybody raving[00:01:13]
One day one night came a Cadillac with four head lights[00:01:17]
Came a man with a big long fat cigar[00:01:26]
Said "C'mere son I'm gonna make you a star"[00:01:28]
Bo Diddley said "Uh what's in it for me "[00:01:32]
Man said "Shut your mouth son[00:01:36]
Play the guitar and you just wait and see"[00:01:39]
Well that boy made it he made it real big[00:01:42]
And so did the rest of the rock 'n' roll scene along with him[00:01:46]
And a white guy called Johnny Otis took Bo Diddleys rhythm[00:01:50]
He changed it into handjive and it went like this[00:01:55]
In a little old country town one day[00:02:02]
A little old country band began to play[00:02:06]
Add two guitars and a beat up saxophone[00:02:09]
When the drummer said "Boy those cats begin to roam"[00:02:13]
Oh baby oh we oh oh[00:02:17]
Ooh la la that rock 'n' roll[00:02:21]
Ya hear me oh we oh oh[00:02:25]
Ooh la la that rock 'n' roll[00:02:29]
Then in the U S music scene there was big changes made[00:02:34]
Due to circumstances beyond our control such as payola[00:02:39]
The rock 'n' roll scene died after two years of solid rock[00:02:45]
And you got discs like ah[00:02:49]
"Take good care of my baby [00:02:53]
Please don't ever make her blue" and so forth[00:02:57]
About ah one year later in a place called Liverpool in England[00:03:03]
Four young guys with mop haircuts began to sing stuff like ah[00:03:09]
"It's been a hard days night and I've been workin' like a dog" and so on[00:03:16]
In a place called Richmond in Surrey way down in the deep south[00:03:26]
They got guys with long hair down their back singin'[00:03:32]
"I wanna be your lover baby I wanna be your man yeah" and all that jazz[00:03:35]
Now we've doin' this number Bo Diddley for quite some time now[00:03:43]
Bo Diddley visited this country last year[00:03:47]
We were playin' at the club a Gogo in Newcastle our home town[00:03:52]
And the doors opened one night and to our surprise[00:03:58]
Walked in the man himself Bo Diddley[00:04:02]
Along with him was Jerome Green his Maraca man[00:04:06]
And the Duchess his gorgeous sister[00:04:10]
And a we were doin' doin' this number[00:04:14]
Along with them came the Rolling Stones the Mersey Beats[00:04:18]
They're all standin' around diggin' it[00:04:22]
And I overheard Bo Diddley talkin'[00:04:24]
He turned around to Jermone Green[00:04:27]
And he said "Hey Jerome[00:04:28]
What do you think these guys doin' our our material "[00:04:32]
Jerome said "Uh where's the bar man please show me to the bar"[00:04:37]
He turned around the Duchess[00:04:43]
And he said "Hey Duchess[00:04:44]
What do you think of these young guys doin' our material "[00:04:46]
She said "I don't know[00:04:49]
I only came across here to see[00:04:52]
The changin' of the guards and all that jazz"[00:04:53]
Well Bo Diddley looked up at me and he said[00:04:56]
With half closed eyes and a smile[00:04:59]
He said "Man took off his glasses"[00:05:02]
He said "Man that sure is the biggest load of rubbish[00:05:07]
I ever heard in my life"[00:05:13]
Hey Bo Diddley[00:05:15]
Oh Bo Diddley[00:05:20]
Yeah Bo Diddley[00:05:23]
Oh Bo Diddley[00:05:27]
Yeah Bo Diddley[00:05:31]
Oh Bo Diddley[00:05:35]
