Belinda - Bobbie Gentry[00:00:00]
When I first met Belinda[00:00:05]
It was down in Corpus Christi[00:00:08]
Back in August I believe in '53[00:00:10]
She was workin' as a dancer[00:00:16]
And her life-size tinted photo[00:00:18]
Beckoned tantalizingly from the marquee[00:00:22]
The red neon was flashing[00:00:31]
Music poured out on the street[00:00:33]
And the club I'm sure [00:00:36]
Had seen it's better days[00:00:38]
And a sea of blurry eyes[00:00:41]
And upturned faces watched Belinda[00:00:43]
As she danced within the noisy [00:00:48]
Smoky haze[00:00:50]
You may know my body[00:00:54]
But you cannot know my mind[00:00:56]
She moved her lips[00:01:00]
But didn't make a sound[00:01:01]
You may know my body[00:01:06]
But you cannot know my mind[00:01:08]
Then she'd dip and twirl[00:01:12]
And smile and dance around[00:01:13]
Belinda was a beauty[00:01:20]
She revealed her body slowly[00:01:22]
So that all the cowboys strained[00:01:25]
And craned to see[00:01:27]
Her sequined skirts would swirl and twirl[00:01:31]
And catch the light and sparkle[00:01:33]
And Belinda's eyes would wander restlessly[00:01:37]
Now I did not know Belinda[00:01:45]
When she was a little girl[00:01:48]
But as a child [00:01:51]
I'm sure she often dreamed[00:01:52]
And I used to wonder used to ponder[00:01:56]
Just what did go wrong[00:01:59]
But then Belinda was[00:02:02]
Not always what she seemed[00:02:03]
You may know my body[00:02:08]
But you cannot know my mind[00:02:10]
She moved her lips[00:02:14]
But didn't make a sound[00:02:15]
You may know my body[00:02:20]
But you cannot know my mind[00:02:22]
Then she'd dip and twirl[00:02:26]
And smile and dance around[00:02:27]
Then one night I wrote a hasty note[00:02:34]
And threw it on the stage[00:02:37]
Askin' her if she would[00:02:39]
Have a drink with me[00:02:41]
And we talked of many things[00:02:44]
About the sunshine and the country[00:02:47]
And a tear came[00:02:51]
To her eye quite suddenly[00:02:52]
And I listened to her [00:02:59]
Thought about her[00:03:01]
Finally I asked her[00:03:02]
"Tell me Belinda [00:03:05]
What does your life mean "[00:03:06]
She looked me in the eye[00:03:10]
And told me "Forty bucks a week"[00:03:12]
And to be a damn good[00:03:16]
Dancing Burlesque queen[00:03:18]
Ah you may know my body[00:03:21]
But you cannot know my mind[00:03:24]
She said to me as she prepared to go[00:03:28]
You may know my body[00:03:34]
But you cannot know my mind[00:03:36]
Then she laughed[00:03:40]
And left to do her second show[00:03:41]
