Old Sam’s Christmas Pudding

Old Sam's Christmas Pudding - Stanley Holloway[00:00:01]

It was Christmas Day in the trenches[00:00:10]

In Spain in Penninsular War[00:00:13]

And Sam Small were cleaning his musket[00:00:16]

A thing as he'd nere done before[00:00:20]

They'd had'em inspected that morning[00:00:23]

And Sam had got into disgrace[00:00:26]

For when sergeant had looked down the barrel[00:00:29]

A sparrow flew out in his face[00:00:32]

The sergeant reported the matter[00:00:35]

To Lieutenant Bird then and there[00:00:38]

Said Lieutenant How very disgusting[00:00:41]

The Duke must be told of this ere[00:00:45]

The Duke were upset when he heard[00:00:49]

He said I'm astonished I am[00:00:52]

I must make a most drastic example[00:00:56]

There'll be no Christmas pudding for Sam[00:00:59]

When Sam were informed of his sentence[00:01:03]

Surprise rooted him to the spot[00:01:07]

Twas much worse than he had expected[00:01:11]

He thought as he'd only be shot[00:01:14]

And so he sat cleaning his musket[00:01:17]

And polishing barrel and butt[00:01:21]

While the pudding his mother had sent him[00:01:24]

Lay there in the mud at his foot[00:01:28]

Now the centre that Sam's lot were holding[00:01:31]

Ran around a place called Badajoz[00:01:35]

Where the Spaniards had put up a bastion[00:01:39]

And ooh what a bastion it was[00:01:43]

They pounded away all the morning[00:01:46]

With canister grape shot and ball[00:01:49]

But the face of the bastion defied them[00:01:52]

They made no impression at all[00:01:56]

They started again after dinner[00:01:59]

Bombarding as hard as they could[00:02:01]

And the Duke brought his own private cannon[00:02:04]

But that weren't a ha'pence o good[00:02:09]

The Duke said Sam put down thy musket[00:02:12]

And help me lay this gun true[00:02:16]

Sam answered You'd best ask your favours[00:02:19]

From them as you give pudding to[00:02:23]

The Duke looked at Sam so reproachful[00:02:26]

And don't take it that way said he[00:02:31]

Us Generals have got to be ruthless[00:02:35]

It hurts me more than it did thee[00:02:38]

Sam sniffed at these words kind of sceptic[00:02:42]

Then looked down the Duke's private gun[00:02:47]

And said We'd best put in two charges[00:02:50]

We'll never bust bastion with one[00:02:54]

He tipped cannon ball out of muzzle[00:02:58]

He took out the wadding and all[00:03:00]

He filled barrel chock full of powder[00:03:03]

Then picked up and replaced the ball[00:03:06]

He took a good aim at the bastion[00:03:09]

Then said Right o Duke let her fly[00:03:12]

The cannon nigh jumped off her trunnions[00:03:16]

And up went the bastion sky high[00:03:20]

The Duke he weren't alf elated[00:03:26]

He danced around trench full of glee[00:03:30]

And said Sam for this gallant action[00:03:33]

You can hot up your pudding for tea[00:03:37]

Sam looked round to pick up his pudding[00:03:40]

But it wasn't there nowhere about[00:03:44]

In the place where he thought he had left it[00:03:48]

Lay the cannon ball he'd just tipped out[00:03:51]

Sam saw in a flash what ad happened[00:03:55]

By an unprecedented mishap[00:03:59]

The pudding his mother had sent him[00:04:03]

Had blown Badajoz off map[00:04:06]

That's why fuisilliers wear to this moment[00:04:09]

A badge which they think's a grenade[00:04:14]

But they're wrong it's a brass reproduction[00:04:17]

Of the pudding Sam's mother once made[00:04:21]
