The Great Dust Storm - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
Written by:Guthrie[00:00:02]
On the 14th day of april of 1935[00:00:03]
There struck the worst[00:00:10]
Of dust storms that ever filled[00:00:12]
The sky[00:00:15]
You could see that dust storm[00:00:17]
Comin' the cloud looked[00:00:19]
Deathlike black[00:00:22]
And through our mighty nation[00:00:24]
It left a dreadful track[00:00:27]
From oklahoma city[00:00:31]
To the arizona line[00:00:34]
Dakota and nebraska[00:00:37]
To the lazy rio grande[00:00:41]
It fell across our city[00:00:44]
Like a curtain of black[00:00:48]
Rolled down[00:00:49]
We thought it was our judgement[00:00:51]
We thought it was[00:00:54]
Our doom[00:00:56]
The radio reported[00:00:58]
We listened with alarm[00:01:01]
The wild and windy actions[00:01:04]
Of this great mysterious storm[00:01:08]
From albuquerque and clovis[00:01:11]
And all new mexico[00:01:15]
They said it was the blackest[00:01:18]
That ever they had[00:01:21]
Saw[00:01:23]
From old dodge city kansas[00:01:25]
The dust had rung their[00:01:28]
Knell[00:01:30]
And a few more comrades[00:01:32]
Sleeping on top of old[00:01:33]
Boot hill[00:01:36]
From denver colorado they[00:01:38]
Said it blew so strong[00:01:42]
They thought that they could[00:01:45]
Hold out but they didn't[00:01:47]
Know how long[00:01:50]
Our relatives were huddled into[00:01:52]
Their oil boom shacks[00:01:56]
And the children they was cryin'[00:01:59]
As it whistled through[00:02:02]
The cracks[00:02:04]
And the family it was crowded[00:02:06]
Into their little room[00:02:09]
They thought the world had[00:02:12]
Ended and they thought it[00:02:14]
Was their doom[00:02:17]
The storm took place at sundown[00:02:19]
It lasted through the[00:02:22]
Night[00:02:24]
When we looked out next morning[00:02:26]
We saw a terrible[00:02:29]
Sight[00:02:31]
We saw outside our window[00:02:33]
Where wheat fields they had[00:02:36]
Grown[00:02:37]
Was now a rippling ocean[00:02:40]
Of dust the wind had[00:02:44]
Blown[00:02:45]
It covered up our fences it[00:02:47]
Covered up our barns[00:02:50]
It covered up our tractors[00:02:54]
In this wild and dusty[00:02:57]
Storm[00:02:59]
We loaded our jalopies and[00:03:01]
Piled our families in[00:03:04]
We rattled down that highway[00:03:07]
To never come back again[00:03:11]
