The Great Dust Storm - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
On the 14th day of April of 1935[00:00:03]
There struck the worst of dust storms that ever filled the sky[00:00:10]
You could see that dust storm coming[00:00:17]
The cloud looked deathlike black[00:00:20]
And through our mighty nation[00:00:23]
It left a dreadful track[00:00:27]
From Oklahoma City to the Arizona line[00:00:30]
Dakota and Nebraska to the lazy Rio Grande[00:00:37]
It fell across our city like a curtain of black rolled down[00:00:44]
We thought it was our judgement[00:00:50]
We thought it was our doom[00:00:54]
The radio reported we listened with alarm[00:00:57]
The wild and windy actions of this great mysterious storm[00:01:04]
From Albuquerque and Clovis and all New Mexico[00:01:11]
They said it was the blackest that ever they had saw[00:01:18]
From old Dodge City Kansas the dust had rung their knell[00:01:24]
And a few more comrades sleeping on top of old Boot Hill[00:01:31]
From Denver Colorado they said it blew so strong[00:01:38]
They thought that they could hold out[00:01:45]
But they didn't know how long[00:01:48]
Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks[00:01:51]
And the children they was cryin' as it whistled through the cracks[00:01:58]
And the family it was crowded into their little room[00:02:05]
They thought the world had ended[00:02:12]
And they thought it was their doom[00:02:15]
The storm took place at sundown it lasted through the night[00:02:19]
When we looked out next morning we saw a terrible sight[00:02:25]
We saw outside our window where wheat fields they had grown[00:02:32]
Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown[00:02:40]
It covered up our fences it covered up our barns[00:02:46]
It covered up our tractors in this wild and dusty storm[00:02:53]
We loaded our jalopies and piled our families in[00:03:00]
We rattled down that highway to never come back again[00:03:07]
