I see him still ole Dribbler Bill, his frame as hard as gidgee,[00:00:05]
He drove the mail on Bridal Tracks in country soft & rigid,[00:00:10]
Never had too much to say but when he did was just a drawl,[00:00:14]
And ya’ kinda got the feelin', he'd be handy in a brawl.[00:00:20]
His Leyland truck was like ole Bill, gusty, rough and slow.[00:00:26]
He took that truck through country where a dozer wouldn't go,[00:00:31]
Yeah, but he's been bogged down tyre deep, back in Coober Hole,[00:00:35]
When others turned their trucks around and headed back for home.[00:00:41]
Now old Bill would do those little things for bush folk far from town,[00:00:47]
Had a memory like Sir Sydney, never wrote the items down,[00:00:51]
Newspapers he would put inside, mailbox on the ridge,[00:00:56]
And every stop along the way, had somethin' for the kids.[00:01:02]
He was seen to be a lonely man like one deprived of luck,[00:01:08]
An outward sign did only make was that old Leyland truck,[00:01:13]
He'd caress that smooth ole steerin' wheel, ease along the track,[00:01:17]
The last words that I heard him say was, "See ya later Jack."[00:01:24]
Now the mail still serves the far outback, the jobs they handle fine,[00:01:40]
But mem'ries dwell on Dribbler Bill way back in '39,[00:01:44]
I remember every mail night, the excitement and the thrill,[00:01:49]
As we sat outside and waited for the likes of Dribbler Bill.[00:01:55]
Oh, there's many times he helped us out when tucker got real slack.[00:02:00]
Like fresh meat from the bullocks secured from somewhere up the track,[00:02:05]
Yeah, great old man was Dribbler Bill the kind who’d always stick,[00:02:09]
And he'd risk his life without a thought for the needy and the sick. Hey![00:02:15]
Now I'd like to think that Dribbler Bill still has the wheel in hand,[00:02:27]
Pushin' that old Leyland truck throughout that channel land,[00:02:32]
Should there be no trucks in heaven, it’s a halo to a pup,[00:02:36]
Just give old Bill a day or two and he'll start a mail run up.[00:02:42]
