Albert and The ’Eadsman

On young Albert Ramsbottom's birthday [00:00:06]

His parents asked what he'd like most [00:00:09]

He said to see t Tower of London [00:00:12]

And gaze upon Anne Boleyn's ghost [00:00:15]

They thowt this request were unusual [00:00:19]

And at first to refuse were inclined [00:00:22]

Til Pa said a trip t metrollopse [00:00:25]

Might broaden the little lad's mind [00:00:28]

They took charrybank up to London [00:00:32]

And got there at quarter to fower [00:00:34]

Then seeing as pubs wasn't open [00:00:37]

They went straight away to the tower [00:00:40]

They didn't think much to the buildin [00:00:43]

T weren't what they'd been led to suppose [00:00:46]

And the Bad Word' Tower didn't impress them [00:00:49]

They said Blackpool had got one of those [00:00:52]

At last Albert found a Beefeater [00:00:55]

And filled the old chap with alarm [00:00:58]

By asking for Ghost of Anne Boleyn [00:01:01]

As carried her ead neath her arm [00:01:04]

Said Beefeater You ought to come Fridays [00:01:07]

If it's ghost of Anne Boleyn you seek [00:01:10]

Her union now limits her output [00:01:13]

And she only gets one walk a week [00:01:16]

But he said if it's ghosts that you're after [00:01:20]

There's Lady Jane Grey's to be seen [00:01:23]

She runs around chased by the Eadsman [00:01:26]

At midnight on the old Tower Green [00:01:29]

They waited on t green till near midnight [00:01:33]

Then thinking they'd time for a sup [00:01:37]

They took out what food they'd brought with them [00:01:40]

And waited for t ghost to turn up [00:01:43]

On the first stroke of twelve up jumped Albert [00:01:46]

His mouth full of cold dripping toast [00:01:50]

With his stick with the orses ead andle [00:01:53]

He pointed and said Here's the ghost [00:01:56]

They felt their skins going all goosey [00:02:00]

As Lady Jane's Spectre drew near [00:02:04]

And Albert fair swallered his tonsils [00:02:07]

When the Eadsman an all did appear [00:02:11]

The Eadsman chased Jane round the grass patch [00:02:14]

They saw his axe flash in the moon [00:02:17]

And seeing as poor lass were eadless [00:02:20]

They wondered what what next he would prune [00:02:24]

He suddenly caught sight of Albert [00:02:27]

As midnight was on its last chime [00:02:30]

As he lifted his axe father murmered [00:02:34]

We'll get the insurance this time [00:02:37]

At that Mother rose taking umbridge [00:02:41]

She said Put that cleaver away [00:02:44]

You're not cutting our Albert's ead off [00:02:47]

Yon collar were clean on today [00:02:50]

The brave little lad stood undaunted [00:02:53]

Til the ghost were within half a pace [00:02:56]

Then taking the toast he were eating [00:02:59]

Slapped it dripping side down in his face [00:03:02]

T were a proper set back for the Eadsman [00:03:06]

He let out one owl of despair [00:03:09]

Then taking his ladyfriend with him [00:03:12]

He disappeared just like that there [00:03:15]

When Pa saw the way as they vanished [00:03:19]

He trembled with fear and looked blue [00:03:22]

Til Ma went and patted his shoulder [00:03:26]

An said Sallright lad we saw it too [00:03:28]

Some say twere the drippin as done it [00:03:33]

From a roast leg of mutton it came [00:03:36]

And as the Eadsman had been a Beefeater [00:03:38]

They reckon he vanished from shame [00:03:42]

And around Tower Green from that moment [00:03:45]

They've nere seen a sign of the ghost [00:03:48]

But when t Beefeaters go on night duty [00:03:52]

They take slices of cold drippin toast[00:03:55]
