The Wearing of the Green - John McCormack[00:00:00]
Written by:Traditional/Dion Boucicault[00:00:00]
Oh Paddy dear and did you hear[00:00:16]
The news that's going round[00:00:20]
The shamrock is by law forbid[00:00:23]
To grow on Irish ground[00:00:27]
No more Saint Patrick's Day we'll keep[00:00:30]
His color can't be seen[00:00:34]
For there's a cruel law again the wearing of the green[00:00:37]
I met with Napper Tandy[00:00:45]
And he took me by the hand[00:00:49]
And he said[00:00:51]
How's poor old Ireland and how does she stand[00:00:53]
She's the most distressful country[00:01:01]
That ever yet was seen[00:01:05]
For they're hanging men and women there[00:01:08]
For the wearing of the green[00:01:13]
And if the color we must wear be England's cruel red[00:01:27]
Let it remind us of the blood that Irishmen have shed[00:01:34]
And pull the shamrock from your hat[00:01:42]
And throw it on the sod[00:01:45]
But never fear[00:01:48]
Twill take root there though underfoot tis trod[00:01:51]
When laws can stop the blades of grass[00:01:56]
From growing as they grow[00:02:01]
And when the leaves in summer-time[00:02:03]
Their color dare not show[00:02:08]
Then I will change the color too[00:02:12]
I wear in my caubeen[00:02:17]
But till that day[00:02:21]
Please God I'll stick to the wearing of the green[00:02:24]
