Sam Goes To It - Stanley Holloway[00:00:01]
Sam Small had retired from the Army[00:00:08]
In the old Duke of Wellington's time[00:00:11]
So when present unpleasantness started[00:00:13]
He were what you might call past his prime[00:00:16]
He'd lived for some years in retirement[00:00:19]
And knew nowt of war if you please[00:00:22]
Till they blasted and bombed his allotment[00:00:25]
And shelled the best part of his peas[00:00:28]
T were as if bugles called Sam to duty[00:00:32]
For his musket he started to search[00:00:34]
He found it at last in the Hen house[00:00:37]
Buff Orpingtons had it for perch[00:00:40]
Straight off to the Fusilliers' depot[00:00:43]
He went to rejoin his old troop[00:00:46]
Where he found as they couldn't recruit Him[00:00:49]
Until his age group was called up[00:00:52]
Now Sam wasn't getting no younger[00:00:55]
Past the three score and ten years was he[00:00:58]
And he reckoned by time they reached his age group[00:01:01]
He'd be very near ten score and three[00:01:04]
So he took up the matter with Churchill[00:01:07]
Who said I don't know what to do[00:01:09]
Never was there a time when so many[00:01:13]
Came asking so much from so few[00:01:16]
I don't want no favours Sam answered[00:01:20]
Don't think as I'm one of that mob[00:01:23]
All I'm asking is give me the tools lad[00:01:26]
And let me help finish the job[00:01:29]
I'll fit you in somewhere said Winnie[00:01:31]
Old soldiers we must not discard[00:01:34]
Then seeing he'd got his own musket[00:01:38]
He sent him to join the Home Guard[00:01:41]
They gave Sam a coat with no stripes on[00:01:44]
In spite of the service he'd seen[00:01:47]
Which considering he'd been a King's sergeant[00:01:50]
Kind of rankled you know what I mean[00:01:53]
He said I come back to the Army[00:01:56]
Expecting my country's thanks[00:01:59]
And the first thing I find when I get here[00:02:02]
Is that I've been reduced to the ranks[00:02:05]
He found all the lads sympathetic[00:02:08]
They agreed that 'twere a disgrace[00:02:10]
Except one old chap in the corner[00:02:13]
With a nutcracker kind of a face[00:02:16]
Said the old fella Who do you think you are[00:02:19]
The last to appear on the scene[00:02:22]
And you start off by wanting promotion[00:02:25]
Last come last served see what I mean[00:02:28]
Said Sam Wasn't I at Corunna[00:02:32]
And when company commander got shot[00:02:35]
Didn't I lead battalion to victory[00:02:37]
Said the old fella No you did not[00:02:40]
I didn't said Sam quite indignent[00:02:44]
Why in every fight Wellington fought[00:02:46]
Wasn't I at his right hand to guard him[00:02:49]
Said old chap You were nowt of the sort[00:02:52]
What do you know of Duke and his battles[00:02:56]
Said Sam with a whithering look[00:02:59]
Said the old man I ought to know something[00:03:01]
Between you and me I'm the Duke[00:03:05]
And if you should look in any evening[00:03:09]
You'll find them both in the canteen[00:03:12]
Ex Commander in Chief and ex Sergeant[00:03:15]
Both just Home Guards you know what I mean[00:03:18]
