Word Of Mouth (Live) - Laurie Anderson[00:00:00]
In 1980 as part of a project called Word of Mouth [00:00:00]
I was invited along with a living other artists [00:00:06]
To go to Panape a tiny island[00:00:10]
In the middle of the Pacific [00:00:13]
The idea was that we'd sit around talking for a few[00:00:16]
Days and that the conversations[00:00:20]
Would be made into a talking record [00:00:22]
The first night we were all really jet-lagged but[00:00:27]
As soon as we sat down the organizers set up all[00:00:31]
These mikes and switched on[00:00:35]
Thousand white light bulbs [00:00:37]
And we tried our best to seem as[00:00:40]
Intelligent as possible [00:00:42]
Television had just come to Panape a week before[00:00:46]
We arrived and there was a strong excitement[00:00:49]
Around the island as people crowded[00:00:52]
Around the few sets [00:00:55]
Then the day after we arrived in a bizarre replay[00:00:58]
Of the first TV show ever broadcast to Panape [00:01:02]
Prisoners escaped from a jail broke into the[00:01:07]
Radio station and murdered the DJ [00:01:11]
Then they went off on a[00:01:16]
Rampage through the jungle [00:01:17]
Armed with lawnmower blades In all four people[00:01:20]
Were murdered in cold blood [00:01:26]
Detectives flown[00:01:30]
In from Guam to investigate [00:01:32]
Swarmed everywhere [00:01:34]
At night we stayed around in our cottages [00:01:37]
Listening out into the jungle [00:01:41]
Finally the local chief decided to hold a[00:01:49]
Ceremony for the murder victims [00:01:53]
The artist Marina Brownovich and I went [00:01:57]
As representatives of our group to film it [00:02:00]
The ceremony was held in a large thatched[00:02:05]
Lean-to and most of the ceremony involved[00:02:08]
Cooking beans in pits and brewing[00:02:12]
A dark drink from roots [00:02:15]
The smell was overwhelming Dogs around barking [00:02:20]
And everybody seemed to be having a[00:02:27]
Fairly good time as funerals go [00:02:28]
After a few hours Marina and I[00:02:35]
Were presented to the chief [00:02:38]
Who was sitting on a raised platform above the pits [00:02:40]
We'd been told we couldn't turn our backs on the[00:02:45]
Chief at any time or ever be higher than he was [00:02:48]
So we scrambled up onto the platform with our film[00:02:53]
Equipment and sort of duck-waddled up[00:02:56]
Backwards to the chief [00:02:59]
As a present I brought one of those[00:03:05]
Fred Flintstone cameras [00:03:07]
The kind where the film canister is[00:03:10]
Also the body of the camera [00:03:11]
And I presented it to the chief [00:03:14]
He seemed delighted and began to click off pictures [00:03:18]
He wasn't advancing the film between shots [00:03:23]
But since we were told we shouldn't[00:03:27]
Speak unless spoken to [00:03:29]
I wasn't able to inform him that he[00:03:32]
Wasn't going to get twelve pictures [00:03:35]
But only one very very complicated one [00:03:40]
After a couple more hours the chief lifted his hand [00:03:49]
And there was absolute silence [00:03:53]
All the dogs had suddenly stopped barking [00:03:58]
We looked around and saw the dogs [00:04:02]
All their throats had been simultaneously[00:04:07]
Cut and their bodies [00:04:10]
Still breathing pierced with rods [00:04:14]
Were turning on those pits [00:04:19]
The chief insisted we join in the meal but Marina[00:04:25]
Had turned green and I asked[00:04:29]
If we could just have ours to go [00:04:31]
They carefully wrapped the dogs in leaves[00:04:38]
And we carried their bodies away [00:04:42]
