Randall Knife (Live) - Guy Clark[00:00:01]
My father had a randall knife[00:00:26]
My mother gave it to him[00:00:29]
When he went off to wwii[00:00:32]
To save us all from ruin[00:00:34]
If you've ever held a randall knife[00:00:39]
Then you know my father well[00:00:43]
If a better blade was ever made[00:00:46]
It was probably forged in hell[00:00:49]
My father was a good man[00:00:54]
A lawyer by his trade[00:00:57]
And only once did I ever see[00:01:00]
Him misuse the blade[00:01:03]
It almost cut his thumb off[00:01:07]
When he took it for a tool[00:01:11]
The knife was made for darker things[00:01:14]
Could not bend the rules[00:01:17]
He let me take it camping once[00:01:23]
On a boy scout jamboree[00:01:25]
I broke a half an inch off[00:01:29]
Trying to stick it in a tree[00:01:31]
I hid it from him for a while[00:01:37]
But the knife and he were one[00:01:40]
He put it in his bottom drawer[00:01:43]
Without a hard word one[00:01:46]
There it slept and there it stayed[00:01:51]
For twenty some odd years[00:01:54]
Sort of like excalibur[00:01:57]
Except waiting for a tear[00:02:00]
My father died when I was forty[00:02:32]
And I couldn't find a way to cry[00:02:35]
Not because I didn't love him[00:02:39]
Not because he didn't try[00:02:42]
I'd cried for every lesser thing[00:02:46]
Whiskey pain and beauty[00:02:50]
But he deserved a better tear[00:02:53]
And I was not quite ready[00:02:56]
So we took his ashed out to sea[00:03:02]
Poured 'em off the stern[00:03:05]
And threw the roses in the wake[00:03:08]
Of everything we'd learned[00:03:11]
When we got back to the house[00:03:16]
They asked me what I wanted[00:03:19]
Not the lawbooks not the watch[00:03:22]
I need the things he's haunted[00:03:25]
My hand burned for the randall knife[00:03:29]
There in the bottom drawer[00:03:34]
And I found a tear for my father's life[00:03:37]
All that it stood for[00:03:40]
