The Little Lady Preacher - Tom T. Hall[00:00:00]
Oh, the little lady preacher[00:00:06]
From the limestone church[00:00:08]
I'll never forget her, I guess[00:00:11]
She preached each Sunday mornin'[00:00:16]
On the local radio[00:00:17]
With a big black Bible[00:00:20]
And a snow-white dress[00:00:22]
She was nineteen years of age[00:00:26]
And was developed to a fault[00:00:28]
But I will admit she knew the Bible well[00:00:30]
A little white lace hanky marked the text[00:00:35]
That she would use[00:00:38]
She'd breathe into that microphone[00:00:39]
And send us all to hell[00:00:41]
She had a guitar picker[00:00:45]
By the name of Luther Short[00:00:47]
A hairy-legged soul, lost out in sin[00:00:50]
She would turn and smile at Luther[00:00:54]
When the program would commence[00:00:56]
With a voice as sweet as angels[00:00:59]
She would break out in a hymn[00:01:01]
I was pickin' for her too with[00:01:04]
What we call the doghouse bass[00:01:07]
I clung to every word that passed her lips[00:01:09]
She was down on booze and cigarettes[00:01:12]
And high on days to come[00:01:16]
And she'd punctuate the prophecy[00:01:18]
With movements of her hips[00:01:21]
The Lord, knows how I loved her,[00:01:30]
He was there each time she preached[00:01:32]
But ol' Luther took her home each Sunday morn'[00:01:34]
Lookin' back I still recall the way[00:01:39]
It hurt my tender pride[00:01:41]
I longed to be a hero[00:01:43]
But they're made not born[00:01:45]
Sometimes ol' Luther showed up[00:01:49]
At the studio half-tight[00:01:51]
And smokin' was a thing he liked to do[00:01:54]
She never said a word to him[00:01:58]
But said a prayer for me[00:02:01]
I told her in a way that[00:02:03]
I'd been prayin' for her too[00:02:05]
One Sunday her old man showed up[00:02:09]
And said that she was gone[00:02:11]
Said she and brother Luther had a call[00:02:13]
I can see me standin' in[00:02:16]
That studio that day[00:02:20]
I had to face the heartbreak,[00:02:22]
Unemployment and all[00:02:25]
I don't know where they are,[00:02:28]
'Cause I ain't seen them people since[00:02:30]
Lord, if I judge 'em let me[00:02:33]
Give 'em lots o' room[00:02:34]
I know ol' Luther Short[00:02:37]
And he's a hard ol' boy to change[00:02:39]
And I've often sat and wondered[00:02:43]
Who it was converted whom[00:02:45]
