Madeira M'Dear? (Live) - Flanders & Swann[00:00:00]
Written by:Donald Swann /Michael Flanders[00:00:01]
She was young she was pure[00:00:09]
She was new she was nice[00:00:11]
She was fair she was sweet seventeen[00:00:13]
He was old he was vile[00:00:15]
And no stranger to vice[00:00:17]
He was base he was bad he was mean[00:00:18]
He had slyly inviegled her up to his flat[00:00:21]
To view his collection of stamps[00:00:24]
And he said as he hastened to put out the cat[00:00:26]
The wine his cigar and the lamps[00:00:29]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:00:33]
You really have nothing to fear[00:00:36]
I'm not trying to tempt you that wouldn't be right[00:00:38]
You shouldn't drink spirits at this time of night[00:00:41]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:00:44]
It's so very much nicer than beer[00:00:46]
I don't care for sherry one cannot drink stout[00:00:48]
And port is a wine I can well do without[00:00:51]
It's simply a case of chacun á son gout[00:00:54]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:00:57]
Unaware of the wiles of the snake in the grass[00:01:05]
Of the fate of the maiden who topes[00:01:07]
She lowered her standards by raising her glass[00:01:10]
Her courage her eyes and his hopes[00:01:13]
She sipped it she drank it[00:01:16]
She drained it she did[00:01:17]
And he quietly refilled it again[00:01:18]
And he said as he secretly carved one more notch[00:01:21]
On the butt of his gold handled cane[00:01:24]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:01:27]
I've got a small cask of it here[00:01:29]
And once it's been opened you know it won't keep[00:01:32]
Do finish it up it will help you to sleep[00:01:35]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:01:37]
It's really an excellent year[00:01:39]
Now if it were gin you'd be wrong to say yes[00:01:42]
The evil gin does would be hard to assess[00:01:45]
Besides it's inclined to affect my prowess[00:01:48]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:01:51]
Then there flashed through her mind what her mother had said[00:01:58]
With her ante penultimate breath[00:02:00]
Oh my child should you look at the wine that is red[00:02:02]
Be prepared for a fate worse than death[00:02:05]
She let go her glass with a shrill little cry[00:02:08]
Crash tinkle it fell to the floor[00:02:12]
When he asked what in heaven she made no reply[00:02:14]
But put in a dash for the door[00:02:16]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:02:18]
Rang out down the hall loud and clear[00:02:20]
A tremulous cry that was filled with despair[00:02:23]
As she paused to take breath in the cool midnight air[00:02:25]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:02:28]
The words seemed to ring in her ear[00:02:30]
Until the next morning she woke up in bed[00:02:34]
With a smile on her lips and an ache in her head[00:02:37]
And a beard in her earhole that tickled and said[00:02:41]
Have some madeira m'dear[00:02:44]
